The metallurgical difference between Cr-Mo and Cr-V impact sockets is not important if both are heat treated to the same hardness. Once can compensate for a less stringent manufacturing process by increasing the socket's thickness. For example, the cheap HF impact sockets are thicker than their premium counterparts.

The users believe that Cr-Mo steel is better. Therefore, a Cr-Mo socket tends to cost more than a Cr-V. The manufacturer can also sell Cr-V at a cheaper price due to higher volume.
