is it? I'm still reading that some games released in 2023 may utilize PCIe 4.0 drivers, but it hardly improves performance. The bulk of the optimization responsibility are still with the game dev. It matters for other video/rendering/AI applications.

Eh, a recent Gamers Nexus video showed that PCIe 3 only slows down a 4090 by 1-3% at most (on one test of many, margin of error).

I have one and as far as risers go it's a well made one. The "ROG STRIX!" branding is nonintrusive. Only thing to watch out for is that 10 inches is long for a riser so if you just want your GPU to make a 90 degree bend to vertical this isnt it.

It could matter if your GPU is PCIE x4 or maybe x8 (6400 xt), but for normal gpus it doesnt matter yet. No amount of poor optimization will make your riser a bottleneck

Occasionally my bios lost settings (possibly every 2, 3 months) , if the default settings are loaded, I have to open the case, disconnect the graphic card, force pcie 3.0 again.

Yeah I updated my BIOS after 3 years (which reset all the settings), forgot I had a 3.0 riser and wasted a few hours troubleshooting why I had no GPU signal just last week. I would not recommend a 3.0 riser cable just for this annoyance.

It is critical because if your mobo is pcie gen4 the cable will not work. You will get no display.

Is that only if you have a gen 4 gpu? It would seem silly if i got no display using a gen 3 extension with a gen 3 card. Still kinda wanta know how it even knows what gen it is if its a passive cable.

The way the cables work is weird. The cable and the pcie slot need to match generations basically. If your GPU supports up to gen 3 but you have a gen 4 cable and gen 4 slot it would still work I believe.

It doesn't work for me at least for certain settings/models. Technically you can change your PCI-E speed back to Gen 3 in bios but when I do that, my 4080 stuttered like crazy outputting 5 fps on Red Redemption. Plugged it directly into Mobo and maxed out with 60 fps. I ended up getting a linkup to mount it vertically. Ironically, my entire build is Asus Rog! Lol. And for those who "missed" this deal, please go to eBay. I can barely sell mine for $9.

PCIe is also backward compatible. If you have a PCIe 4.0 graphics card you can use it with a motherboard designed for PCIe 3.0; however, the card's available bandwidth would be limited to the capabilities of PCIe 3.0.
