Right. The riser cable is where the issues come up. You need to match the cable to the motherboard pcie gen or it won't display. There are other caveats but gen 3 cable in a gen 4 slot wouldn't work properly.

can you cite your source? PCIe 3.0 and 4.0 are forward and backwards compatible to each other. the limitation is the bandwidth PCIe 3.0. Are you saying this riser cable physically won't fit into a PCIe motherboard slot? How is it different if they're both PCIe 'standards'? You will have to select PCIe 3.0 in your mobo bios. Some mobo are supposed to auto detect, but doesn't and that's a known issue.

The slots are the same. It's when there is a conflict between mobo gen and cable gen. Yes, pcie 3.0 devices will work in a 4.0 slot but when you introduce the riser cable it causes problems. For example, I had a b450 mobo which is a gen 3 board, and a gen 3 riser and all was well. Switched it all over to an x570 board, which the top slot is gen4.0, and the graphics card would not display.
