wonder if these Amish folks have a website i can order pure urea from
YMMV, but check your local walmart's garden center for fertilizer and seed markdowns this time of year. mine had a pallet of the scott's 14lb yellow bag of weed and feed for $7; roughly 75% off.

for the past 4-5 years, i usually spend like $40 in the early fall on markdowns to stock up for next year.

This is not a slick deal. Its a deal in which you get the older version of 37.5 lb (15000 sqft coverage) Winterguard for the price of a 32.5lb (12000 sqft coverage) new 2023 version.

Cost of Nitrogen per pound is considerably more than other options from Menards or Ace Hardware.

Cost of nitrogen is only part of the story. The prill size on Scotts is a lot smaller and also much easier to spread.

Ace 26 costs 4 dollars less for same coverage. That's 20% less nitrogen.

As to fresher nitrogen made in 2023 being superior v nitrogen made in 2022 or prior years that's just silly. So long as the product is stored properly it can last decades.

Will this product absolutely not good for spring or summer, only for fall and winter?

This has higher percentage of quick release nitrogen that would lead to top growth which is not desirable in spring.

You can save bag for next year in a dry place and away from heat.

I has 12.5 lb version last winter for $15.31 it was on sale with S&S discount and was coupon as well. This is bigger version of it around same price. if you have a big yard should be good. if not wait till 12.5 lb may get discount again may not !

is it best to completely de-dandelion your lawn (I'm in the PNW, with clay-ish soil, if that is pertinent) before applying? Would it be a mistake to spread before digging out as many roots as possible, or does that really matter?

I'd never dig dandelions. Use this this fall. ALSO, use diopthyr in the fall and prodiamine in the spring and you will be PREVENTING weed growth in no time. In the meantime a cheap hose end weed killer (ie. Spectracide) will help clear out weeds.
