Phone call quality and noise cancellation during phone call seems to be pretty bad from reviews I've seen. The Linkbuds seems to cancel noise a whole lot better. I'm not sure why these top tier earbuds are performing so badly?
Link buds S are the best one to buy. Forget about the flagship for phone calls.

I got my first pair from Secondipity on eBay and got the 2 year warranty. I sent them in last week and today got an email stating "After a close inspection of your item, we've determined that a repair is not possible." New batteries are about $15 and it takes maybe 20 minutes, a heat gun and a little glue to fix them. The $20 defective pair I got off eBay in June (I replaced the batteries) are still working with a long battery life.

I wonder if you could get away with keeping the charging case and just send in the buds. You are supposed to keep accessories but are supposed to send in the charger/AC adapter. Working cases are harder to get than earbuds.
So they didn't offer to replace the item or refund your money since repair was not possible? Or denied it saying batteries are not covered.?

Also, do you have a link for the battery replacement guide?

I bought the xm4 on secondipity deal, they had the common tone issue where the speaker shield would sound like a bell every time it played. Had to return, waste of time
Got my XM4 from secondipity. More than a year ago. It was just in a zip lock bag, but works as good as new. Still charges to 100% until today.

This deal is huge. These were probably just bought and returned with minimal wear.
Counterpoint - I bought the previous version of these (the XM4s) and within a year they were routinely dropping bluetooth connection. Sony was very easy to work with and got me out a new pair. I would be bummed if I hadn't had that full year warranty.

No way I'd buy these again without a two year warranty.

Check out Louis Rossam YouTube video on well know battery issue of XM4. Very bad of Sony and it happened to me on my XM4s

Will be avoiding Sony in the foreseeable future.
Sony reportedly changed the battery tech on the XM5 to address that very issue. Sony replaced my XM4s when when the battery life shortened and gave me a new (not refurbished) pair. So while the design was flawed, they stood behind it and fixed in the subsequent generation. I'm not sure how much more you're looking for from a company.

Read that these fall out of the ear while exercising
Is that just some people or, MOST people? Are these waterproof?

Yes they do. I would not recommend these for gym / excercise. Their noise canceling and sound quality is unmatched though, I use these when traveling and they have the ability to quiet anything from an airplane cabin to a huge terminal, heck they even can mute the sound of a lawnmower engine, they are that good

Was your XM4 under warranty? The point being the batteries are a known defect, yet Sony refused to help if outside of warranty. Also this 'known' defect isn't even acknowledged officially by Sony, so essentially past warranty, you're SOL.

Where did you hear Sony changed the battery tech on XM5? Furthermore, XM4 aren't s hardware issue, but was corrupted after OTA firmware update.

Just my experience, but I've purchased XM3, XM4, XM5 headphones and XM4 earbuds from them. In every case, they failed to provide accurate tracking (a label is created, but it never indicates the product was received or is usable as tracking)... however, in 3 out of 4 cases it arrived 1-2 days before the eBay listed ETA. In one case it arrived 2 days after the ETA, just as the "item didn't arrive" claim could be submitted.

In one case, the item was perfect and one of the best purchases I ever made (the XM3).

The XM4 that a buzz in the left ear which I didn't discover until a month after the return period was over (I was out-of-country for two months)... it's still usable in most circumstances but pretty annoying.

The XM4 earbuds have slightly worse battery life than my friend's pair, but otherwise good.

The XM5 look and seem perfect, but I'm still in return window putting through its paces to make sure there are no problems.

$228 with the 2 year Allstate warranty, I actually used that for my WF-1000XM4's, which I purchased from Secondipity, that had the battery issue and got a refund no problem. I really liked the headphones so I'm going to upgrade for a net of $40.

Edit: Through eBay, never bought directly from Secondipity

These are the Wirecutter's new pick for best noise-cancelling earbuds, beating out Bose. They haven't yet posted their review, which should hopefully address some common concerns.

As for Secondipity, I bought the refurb WH-1000XM4 headphones from them last year and they are serving me very well with no issues.

They are sending a check for the full amount I paid.
I watched this youtube video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2twbzhtLaE ) I used a heatgun set to 100c to heat the bud until it was uncomfortable to hold. I then used a utility knife to pry the sides apart (be careful not to push down too hard or the case will get cut). On the first bud I tried disconnecting the ribbon cable as in the video but the cable is stuck so I completed the repair without removing the first and didn't try on the second. The battery is glued in on both ends so I used the heatgun again to soften the glue before removing the top board and removing the battery from the bud.
I used E-8000 glue to make sure the top board was glued securely to the new battery (my first bud definitely needed it). I tested the buds, then glued the case together with E-8000.

Anyone know of a solution to them falling out of your ear? Do they make a ear bud that attaches to a clip that fits into your ear similar to the Bose?
