You can if you ask nicely. No one should care.

I was a waiter there long ago and I used to place multiple "refills" before the check would come and pack them up to go depending on the customer. Particularly college kids - I knew money was tight, being one myself at the time, and a bunch of leftovers would change my week quite a bit. That and they paid me like $3.50/hr. Darden restaurant bottom line was the least of my concerns.

No worries if you don't like this restaurant (I'm personally not the biggest fan) but please don't bash it too much as it's my 9 year old son's favorite place, so I'm sure there are many other OG lovers out there too... both kids and adults alike

Happy eating!

Poster asked when in time (as in when has tipping not been a "thing"). Are you saying you don't tip anywhere else except the US, or you only tip outside the US?

I should have clarified that my response was based on my personal experiences visiting certain countries

not a good deal, my local all you can eat Chinese and Mongolian is only a few bucks more and you can have all you eat proteins instead of just the super filling pasta and soup that cost a lot less than proteins.
True SDer want to fill up on the protein, not the cheap carbs.
in NYC, you cant even get a loaf of bread for $14, let alone an all you can eat meal like this. definitely a super slick deal in this day and age. just had a burger and fries for two at an astoria joint with a friend. $54 that included tip. they charged $7 for fries and $15 for the burger each.

Why would you eat at an Olive Garden when you eat at a million different places specifically in a culinary diverse city like NYC? Do you go to McDonald's at Time Square for the next meal?
It wasn't planned. We were literally sick and tired after a long place ride and it was about 9 or 10pm. We just needed something and it was right there. Having said that McDonald's would have even been a better choice.

So for me this is $18.99 not $13.99. Hardly anyone will order without the meat.

No thanks, tipping has ruined the dining experience.
We shouldn't even call it tipping. I am all for throwing down something extra in return for great service. But the expectation that I should buy a meal for the person bringing it to me, regardless of the quality of service is what's ruining it.

I don't know who is more to blame, the entitled and poor quality servers, who are making people second guess the whole thing. Or the restaurant owners who expect the customer to subsidize their payroll. Imagine if it worked this way in other industries.

There are some polite, intelligent servers out there, who know their job and do it well. They are the ones I feel bad for as the scales have definitely tipped and ppl are tipping less and less. Please don't let the ridiculous situation that is currently tipping prevent you from rewarding good service.

I tried OG for the first time over the summer. It's really gross. And I am not a food snob. I will eat anything. It's at best cafeteria food.

All the people saying you must tip need to understand. The moment you declare tipping should be mandatory, is the moment you legitimize the argument that service staff can be paid less because they're going to receive tips.

The only real solution I can see to this is to prohibit tips. If service workers can't count on tips anymore, they'll walk out of the job interview if they aren't offered an acceptable wage. As long as the nebulous quantity of tips is on the table, it's impossible for applicants to accurately gauge how much take-home pay they should expect from a job. And the restaurant can get people to accept a job with a lowball wage because of the hopes that tips will make up for it.

IMHO lumping people together by their occupation (server, restaurant owner, etc) is just as bad as lumping people together according to their race.

There are good servers and bad servers. There are good owners and bad owners. If you're a good server, I'll tip you. (Note that "good server" does not necessarily mean good service. I've tipped well for a server who had clearly been assigned to wait way too many tables because they were short-staffed. Effort matters.) If you're a good owner I'll visit your restaurant frequently.

Must be new to full service dining…
I always tip at sit-in restaurants irrespective of the service quality. This is because for the longest time the small business owners have been getting away passing the baton to the customer to subsidize their cost and put more money in their own pockets. The waiters over there have no choice but to work as that is their livelihood.

What I have recently started doing is tipping for take-outs, coffee shops, counter order restaurants, and anywhere where you order and they put up a screen on your face asking for a tip. If these people stop getting tips then eventually they will revolt against the owners who would have to pay them or lose employees, and that is lost time and money for the owners, proprietors, franchise owners, etc. I have decided that will not allow any of my hard-earned money to go into the pockets of these nefarious small businesses. The unfortunate collateral damage to this situation are the poor employees who stand to lose. But there has to be a stop to it and someone has to start and make it a trend to not tip at such locations.

Exactl my point above, except that I have stopped tipping at places like Starbucks and counter service restaurants or similar. The tipping culture at sit-down restaurants goes back quite far and there should be a slow change maybe by starting to tip less and less. But understand that for these servers who accepted the low-ball wages did so because of the existing tipping culture in America. Don't let their kids and families go hungry because they are really doing all the work while the restaurant owners are making the money.

I have also started educating all my close friends and family that do not tip in the counter service places. Starbucks makes enough money selling a spoonful of coffee mixed with water that they can pay their employees. I will not pay a tip how much ever embarrassing they want to make by shoving a screen down my throat.

$14 for this now? Ouch! I guess I'm just too cheap. With tip, it's like costing nearly $20 if you are drinking water. That use to be the cost of nicer meal 2-3 years ago. This price is now considered a good deal too! 😞
