I was a waiter there long ago and I used to place multiple "refills" before the check would come and pack them up to go depending on the customer. Particularly college kids - I knew money was tight, being one myself at the time, and a bunch of leftovers would change my week quite a bit. That and they paid me like $3.50/hr. Darden restaurant bottom line was the least of my concerns.
Happy eating!

True SDer want to fill up on the protein, not the cheap carbs.
I don't know who is more to blame, the entitled and poor quality servers, who are making people second guess the whole thing. Or the restaurant owners who expect the customer to subsidize their payroll. Imagine if it worked this way in other industries.
There are some polite, intelligent servers out there, who know their job and do it well. They are the ones I feel bad for as the scales have definitely tipped and ppl are tipping less and less. Please don't let the ridiculous situation that is currently tipping prevent you from rewarding good service.

The only real solution I can see to this is to prohibit tips. If service workers can't count on tips anymore, they'll walk out of the job interview if they aren't offered an acceptable wage. As long as the nebulous quantity of tips is on the table, it's impossible for applicants to accurately gauge how much take-home pay they should expect from a job. And the restaurant can get people to accept a job with a lowball wage because of the hopes that tips will make up for it.

There are good servers and bad servers. There are good owners and bad owners. If you're a good server, I'll tip you. (Note that "good server" does not necessarily mean good service. I've tipped well for a server who had clearly been assigned to wait way too many tables because they were short-staffed. Effort matters.) If you're a good owner I'll visit your restaurant frequently.

What I have recently started doing is tipping for take-outs, coffee shops, counter order restaurants, and anywhere where you order and they put up a screen on your face asking for a tip. If these people stop getting tips then eventually they will revolt against the owners who would have to pay them or lose employees, and that is lost time and money for the owners, proprietors, franchise owners, etc. I have decided that will not allow any of my hard-earned money to go into the pockets of these nefarious small businesses. The unfortunate collateral damage to this situation are the poor employees who stand to lose. But there has to be a stop to it and someone has to start and make it a trend to not tip at such locations.

IMHO lumping people together by their occupation (server, restaurant owner, etc) is just as bad as lumping people together according to their race.

I have also started educating all my close friends and family that do not tip in the counter service places. Starbucks makes enough money selling a spoonful of coffee mixed with water that they can pay their employees. I will not pay a tip how much ever embarrassing they want to make by shoving a screen down my throat.
