It's not that bad. I chose a week in late October (10/31 to 11/6) and can get an intermediate car for under $40/day (Avis or Budget). Hotels can be expensive, especially with the fees that are tacked on. But there are lots of nice looking AirBnB options on Honolulu/Waikiki near the $100/night rate.

Nice! Was waiting for this deal to show up. Got two March flights for free. Went in Feb 2023, had a great time but got delayed for 11 hours on my departure fight from LA. Hawaiian Airlines gave me a $300 credit for the delay.

Need to pay attention to those short term rental. Some of them are operating illegal in areas that doesn't allow it. You may end up having to look for another accommodation when you get there.

To be fair, Hotels in Waikiki are about the same price as many cities in USA (i.e. Seattle, NYC, San Diego, Miami, etc.). You can get 3-star deals on Priceline for 150 a night or less.
