They are NOT great for use in a chlorinated swimming pool. I originally bought a pair of these after doing some research on swim trunks that would actually last. These were consistently recommended. They are well built, they're comfortable. Whether they look good is subjective. For my taste they are a little sloppy looking, but I'm not exactly Adonis so your mileage may vary on that front.
But if you intend to use these in a pool, understand that the dyes used for the fabric will lose their vibrancy almost immediately. I wash my suits within hours of being in the pool, doesn't matter. After one use, my pair was badly faded. After half a dozen uses the original color was unrecognizable. After a year of intermittent use (maybe 20 times total) I had to discard them because the fabric was literally translucent.
So again - great shorts if you want to use them for beachwear, outdoor activities, etc. But do not buy these expecting them to be useful in a pool.

First, from a purely aesthetic standpoint, dyes are obviously used to make clothing look cooler or more appealing. The way something looks influences our decision to buy it. When all the dyes leech out, it stops looking the way it did when we decided to buy it. Yes that is superficial, but I think we can all agree that most clothing purchases have an elemental of superficiality to them. Clothing is not 100% function over fashion. The particular pair I chose to buy was a cool aqua color. When they quickly turned the color of unbleached paper towels, that was fairly disappointing considering if I had wanted to wear unbleached paper towels I could have just done that for a lot less than the $50 I spent on these trunks.
Second, I mentioned I am not exactly the ideal physique. I am also pretty hairy. I'm also a middle-aged adult man. I bring my kids to the pool. I'm there with other families. I wear a swimming suit because I don't want the cops being called on me for being a big fat hairy dude exposing himself to children. And because, you know, I have at least a little modesty. Also most pool rules generally state that you must have yourself covered to be at the pool. When shorts become translucent (which these absolutely did), they no longer fulfill their primary purpose of satisfactorily obscuring my bits. No one needs to see that.
So yes, they lose functionality.
