My family prefers side by side vs french door. My parents can't bend over due to back/knee in order to take things out of the freezer in a French door. Also, it's hard to pull things out of the bottom of the freezer bucket, have to move everything on top first. It's hard to tell what's down there in the books and crannies of the freezer bucket. Side by side, there's many shelves so can stay more organized and can peek all the way to the back most of the time.

For us... The freezer section is more convenient to find things stacked up shelf by shelf.

Bought for $1300 in April 2022. Would recommend as as a no frills reliable fridge. We like side-by-side over French door because you don't have to bend over and hunt for stuff. More room and access for bigger frozen items.

I need a counter depth. they seemingly never get this cheap :/
They do have counter depth for about the same price, but 21 cu-ft instead of 28 cu-ft.

Ive had this fridge a few years and dislike it. Ill say that all Brands have problems and it seems no one makes a great fridge anymore but these are my gripes with this one-

1. When the Ice system did work, the ice would constantly freeze stuck together and jam, would have to dump it all out and start over. The seal to dispense ice isn't good and lets in humidity. There is rust on the metal.

2. After a couple of years the ice system stopped working. Its because there is a wire harness in the door frame and it pulls on the wires and rubs on them every time you open the door. Eventually they just break and electronics stop working. I re-soldered them together and they eventually broke again. Now I use ice trays. This issue is all over youtube for repairs

3. The motor is very loud so being next to the living room is awful. The motor is always running. My old kenmore was quiet and didn't run this much at all.

4. The freezer fan has locked up with ice build up a few times so ive had to empty the freezer to clean it off.

5. The door shelves are very thin plastic, one broke, i would avoid putting heavier things like milk and orange juice on the door. I epoxy repaired it because replacements are like $80

6 Freezer didnt come with enough shelves but the pictures looks like there are more than i have so maybe this has been resolved.

All that being said I would probably still buy a whirlpool over a samsung or lg. But i would probably try to find something with no water/ice dispensers.

We have a very similar Whirlpool fridge now (previous version). I hate it and can't wait for it to finally die. The ice maker has broken three times. The water dispenser has broken twice. The ice dispenser paddle does not work right and it will just randomly spit out ice all over the floor. Things in the back of the fridge freeze over. Did I mention how much I hate this fridge. I prefer a side-by-side and am planning on getting a GE the next time it goes on sale. I don't trust LG and definitely don't trust Samsung.
I would feel happy if i can convince one person not to buy an LG of anything. Every LG I bought died or was horrible. They have a bad customer service also. I know it has nothing to do with this post.

I don't like side by sides because pizzas have to be stored sideways in the freezer and all the toppings fall to the edge of the pizza.

We have this fridge, we hate it. Stuff always feeezes up in the fridge and it's been looked at. Tech looked at it when our water dispenser went out at 1 year old and he said nothing is wrong.
Ha. We had a similar issue with a Whirlpool tech. From the beginning our water came out room temperature instead of chilled. The tech shrugged his shoulders and said nothing is wrong.

Exactly! I've had a side by side for 30 years. When I go to get something out of the freezer, I have a pretty good idea which shelf it is on. Unlike a french door where everything is thrown n the bottom freezer ans one must dig through it and drag stuff out in order to find what you are looking for. When this one dies I will get another.

Lot of folks here seem to like side-by-side. But it's the opposite for us. We have a side by side (came with the house we bought), and we don't like it at all.

The problem is that most people have bowls or containers that won't fit neatly till the edge. And so there is always some space wasted near the side walls where nothing can fit. On a side-by-side the width of each shelf is so narrow, quite a lot of space gets wasted. Practically this means that even though the fridge may have the same volume, the number of items you can fit into the fridge is significantly reduced.

As a hypothetical example to convey via math - Case A you have 10 shelves, each being 30" wide. All your bowls are 8" wide. You can fit only 3 bowls side by side on each shelf. That makes it a total of 30 bowls from top to bottom. In case B you have 5 shelves which are 60" wide. Now you'll fit 7 bowls on each shelf. That makes it a total 35 bowls. Despite volume available being the same in each case, Case B can fit more stuff.

Of course, this was just a hypothetical example to illustrate my point. In actual use you'll always find some small item to fit on the sides. But the point is that we find that we have to do space management a lot more often on a fridge with narrower shelves, than what we needed to do on a regular wide fridge. We are pretty sure when we replace this fridge it won't be a side-by-side.

Guess what I'm saying is that each design has its pro and cons. The pros of the side by side were well put in an earlier post. I'm just pointing out the con. You have to consider what works best for you.
You must have a small cubic foot side by side. I have plenty of room in my 25 cu ft unit.

Will costco move our old fridge to the basement instead of hauling it away?

The icemaker is deal but we still want to use it down there.

Try wrapping your left over pizza with plastic wrap. It will stay fresher and fit in your fridge. Never understood the remark a pizza box won't fitin a side by side.

Doesn't matter how wide the fridge is. Constraining horizontal width and turning it into more vertical height will always result in less items fitting on each shelf (unless all your container sizes are in perfect multiples that maximize horizontal space utilization).

And so a side-by-side will always need more space management compared to a French door fridge of equal overall width. On the flip side a pull out bottom freezer on a French door design will always have to contend with stacking of freezer items.

I do understand what your point is - make a fridge wide enough and the size constraints become moot. But a fridge size and design that works in your usage scenario may not work for someone else.

Again, my point is - one just needs to be aware of pros and cons of each design. The fact that each manufacturer sells different designs proves that there is no one design that is inherently better than the other. It's just personal preference.

I recommend to not buy a fridge with a door water/ice dispenser. You will have few models to choose from if you must have an ice maker but it will last longer. If you must then absolutely don't buy an over under with ice coming from fridge section.

Also don't ever buy an Electrolux or Frigidaire. Have experience at that company.

Side note. The water filters in all fridges are garbage. Get yourself an RO system and drink water that is actually filtered.

I have this same fridge and it's the worst fridge I've ever owned. So many issues. The fridge makes crazy loud sounds that can easily be heard from the loving room. I've repaired it on my own 2 times already for parts failing and just recently the evaporator fan has been going on and off constantly.

Need to buy a fridge for a new apartment I'm moving to. It doesn't have connections for water in the fridge. Can that just not be installed or does this fridge require it even if I just didn't use it? Or are there cheaper options?
Fridges will work without water connection.
