1. When the Ice system did work, the ice would constantly freeze stuck together and jam, would have to dump it all out and start over. The seal to dispense ice isn't good and lets in humidity. There is rust on the metal.
2. After a couple of years the ice system stopped working. Its because there is a wire harness in the door frame and it pulls on the wires and rubs on them every time you open the door. Eventually they just break and electronics stop working. I re-soldered them together and they eventually broke again. Now I use ice trays. This issue is all over youtube for repairs
3. The motor is very loud so being next to the living room is awful. The motor is always running. My old kenmore was quiet and didn't run this much at all.
4. The freezer fan has locked up with ice build up a few times so ive had to empty the freezer to clean it off.
5. The door shelves are very thin plastic, one broke, i would avoid putting heavier things like milk and orange juice on the door. I epoxy repaired it because replacements are like $80
6 Freezer didnt come with enough shelves but the pictures looks like there are more than i have so maybe this has been resolved.
All that being said I would probably still buy a whirlpool over a samsung or lg. But i would probably try to find something with no water/ice dispensers.

The problem is that most people have bowls or containers that won't fit neatly till the edge. And so there is always some space wasted near the side walls where nothing can fit. On a side-by-side the width of each shelf is so narrow, quite a lot of space gets wasted. Practically this means that even though the fridge may have the same volume, the number of items you can fit into the fridge is significantly reduced.
As a hypothetical example to convey via math - Case A you have 10 shelves, each being 30" wide. All your bowls are 8" wide. You can fit only 3 bowls side by side on each shelf. That makes it a total of 30 bowls from top to bottom. In case B you have 5 shelves which are 60" wide. Now you'll fit 7 bowls on each shelf. That makes it a total 35 bowls. Despite volume available being the same in each case, Case B can fit more stuff.
Of course, this was just a hypothetical example to illustrate my point. In actual use you'll always find some small item to fit on the sides. But the point is that we find that we have to do space management a lot more often on a fridge with narrower shelves, than what we needed to do on a regular wide fridge. We are pretty sure when we replace this fridge it won't be a side-by-side.
Guess what I'm saying is that each design has its pro and cons. The pros of the side by side were well put in an earlier post. I'm just pointing out the con. You have to consider what works best for you.
The icemaker is deal but we still want to use it down there.
And so a side-by-side will always need more space management compared to a French door fridge of equal overall width. On the flip side a pull out bottom freezer on a French door design will always have to contend with stacking of freezer items.
I do understand what your point is - make a fridge wide enough and the size constraints become moot. But a fridge size and design that works in your usage scenario may not work for someone else.
Again, my point is - one just needs to be aware of pros and cons of each design. The fact that each manufacturer sells different designs proves that there is no one design that is inherently better than the other. It's just personal preference.
Also don't ever buy an Electrolux or Frigidaire. Have experience at that company.
Side note. The water filters in all fridges are garbage. Get yourself an RO system and drink water that is actually filtered.
