These are a cotton blend: cotton 67%, nylon 31%, spandex 2%.

I generally prefer these types of shorts to 100% cotton. Lighter and cooler, don't shrink or fade as much, and the little bit of stretch gives me a better range of motion.

I don't doubt that cost is a factor, but I think short and pants made out of blends w/ cotton/nylon/polyester/spandex/etc. are so common now because that's what people want to buy.

The sizing is all over the place even with reading that sizing chart. I bought these on Medium and they felt like small. Strongly encourage you to buy a couple sizes and return what doesn't fit. Old Navy makes is very easy to return stuff.. specially if you have an Old Navy store near you or a Staples (they accept their returns).

You must be built very different from me. I'm 5' 11" too, and 9" shorts stop right above my knees. 11" shorts would cover my knees.
8-9" shorts are the sweet spot for me.
