The math on these things rarely, if ever works out if you compare it to just purchasing the product in cans.

If you add up the cost of the machine, the cartridges and the syrups, you're well beyond what a twelve pack usually costs.

I did what many have: I purchased my own 5lb CO2 cylinder. I actually filled it up back in May and haven't had to refill yet! That's with typically making one liter per day. You're right, the upfront cost is high, but the more time goes by and you save from not buying the cans you would have bought otherwise, it pays itself off and then some.

Dunno about the 5lb but a 20lb costs between $30-40 to fill (and about $120 to buy empty). I can fill about 15 sodastream cylinders (which at $18 a refill is $270).

More than the cost (it's pennies anyway), it's the convenience of having that comfort taste of a known soda brand handy, like after you eat pizza, etc.

I found out that Target has all Pepsi options and and bought one diet Pepsi for about $4.70, after a 30% discount.

Not sure about the expiry dates on these things, so safe to buy one and try.

I don't trust Amazon with anything that has an expiry date - I don't think their warehouses and shipping systems preserve the quality of goods.

I bought this Victory 5lb CO2 Tank Aluminum Cylinder [amazon.com] off Amazon for $80. I called around about getting it filled, and you'll need to know that there are a number of places that will only swap cylinders with you. In other words, you'll have to turn in your brand new cylinder and get a (likely) old one instead. But I read online that brewing stores will often fill CO2 tanks, and indeed I found one locally that refilled my own cylinder for only $20!

My local beverage supply place does refills and I can keep my tank.

This 30% in addition to many accounts having a 20% off and if the$10 back when spending $50+ works as well this makes for a pretty solid deal!

Curious since my parents recently gave me their sodastream and we've definitely been getting good use of it but the cost is definitely a concern. Which refillable tank do you use in your sodastream? Saw some online and they seemed really expensive
