Some states charge EV owners an added annual tax (aka registration fee) since they don't pay gas taxes to contribute to maintaining the roads they drive on like the rest of us. Ridiculously, some states give a credit instead of a fee. The same ones that cry about our crumbling infrastructure the loudest.

I think this depends on where you live. NYS is the same. Yearly inspection is $10 for EV's. Car Insurance is just high in more populated area (doesn't matter the car).

When we leased a Kia Soul EV and that was more to insure than our Tesla Model 3. A $30 difference.

You might have to upgrade your electrical service panel before you even think about installing a fast charger, especially in older homes. Another big added cost.

If you need an electrical panel to be upgraded to handle this it's probably safe to say you should upgrade the panel regardless for safety reasons.

edit: I just read the article in your link. you don't need 200A service, we have a 100A service to our house and charge overnight. We're not running a heavy draw load of appliances 24/7.

I misunderstood as an old electric panel needing to be replaced with the breakers.

Being honest. Wife drives '21 Range Rover sports which is out of this world experience. My bro-in-law just bought model Y some months back (pretty much same config but some extras). I drove it last weekend and was surprised how much I loved it ...the get-go speed is fooking mind-blowing since ther'es no tranny for gear shifting. The braking took me a little while to get adjusted to but all in all, I felt I had more driving control than driving my RR Sports (which at high speed becomes a sniper bullet travelling at high speeds).

I drive a lifted ford ranger (on lease) but thinking to return it next year and just get a Tesla (mainly for short runs to Costco..lol).

lmfao the dude in the vid spent $19k in repairs. I'm almost 250k miles in my civic and only repair I've had to do is a starter ($100)
GTFO, I drive a Prius that has no major problems and I still spend more in fuel & maintenance costs (I do my own oil changes, filter changes, repairs) than my buddy that owns a Model 3.

So what's the total on the New spec Model Y compared to the old one?
  • Vehicle Price $48,490
  • Destination fee $1,390
  • Order Fee $250
  • Your Model Y $50,130

+ NJ Sales Tax
- $7500 Fed
- $1500 NJ Rebate
Any more addons like Tow hitch and wheels a second time? another $3000?

I would finish out that calculation. What's the big plus on the 2022 vs 2023 Model Y in your situation? mileage?

Aren't interest rates higher on the new loan versus your 2022? The difference would be another $ hit that you would take.
Thank you for explaining in detail. After doing the calculations, it seems like I'd be throwing away $22,750 that I've already spent over the past 19 months (8500 down + 750/m), even though the new car is cheaper, LOL. It's a new car, and it's an HW4, plus it comes with a 2-year warranty extension. The interest rate I received is 2.5% APR, and compared to the current 6.5% APR, there's about a $6,000 difference on a $50,000 loan. When I crunch the numbers, it looks like I could save around $4,000 in total by switching to the new car If I am correct.

specs are same (added wheel + tow)

I just want to let you guys know as a 2023 tesla model y owner that although I love the car, its back seat is very uncomfortable and causes nausea if driven roughly or if my wife or I am on the phone.

Any tips or tricks like leasing for those who don't meet the eligibility criteria for getting the tax credit?

Not sure where you come up with 300 miles lmao

"Level 1 charging provides approximately four to five miles of range per hour charged."

Mine is charging at 46 miles an hour as I'm typing this, your lack of knowledge (beyond regurgitating the same tired talking points) is a disservice to everyone in this thread.

The AWD and range increase makes this a decently easy choice now, frankly these cars last forever, teslas ability to make the car an appliance means youll likely keep it in your family for years upon years, youll either give it to your parents, sister, kid, etc after 8 years. $4500 over 8 years is only extra $562. Its almost "regret insurance" at that point, if every year you get into a situation where you wish you had awd and slightly more range than youll kick yourself for not having gotten this. (I also think the LR has subwoofers and rwd doesnt... but someone would have to confirm that for me)
You forgot all the other things that bring down the value of a car, like time, rust, wear and tear, damage from visiting rodents, dents, scratches, wear and tear, style changes, safety feature evolution, wear and tear, sun damage, and I'm sure there are more. These cars are not heirloom items like you suggest they are. They're really painted steel buckets with large batteries, small motors, and wheels. And everything else stuffed in there probably won't last as long as the bucket.

For those with noise complaints would it make sense for a stereo shop to remove all the interior carpet and use fatmat/ dynamat for sound deadening? Surely it will cost 2500$ to do the entire car but would it be worth it?
You're wasting your money.

You need vibration absorption on 25% of the panels. You need closed cell foam over that to decouple your sound deadener. Then you need mass loaded vinyl on top, under the carpet, for noise deadening.

Just dynamat doesn't so shit. And $2500 is ludicrous, that's $500 in materials and an afternoon with nothing more than a socket set and scissors.

I wonder if I should trade in my model 3 for model y. I hate all the interior noise from model 3.
My dealership said they refuse to take Tesla trade-ins anymore because of this unpredictable price fluctuations from Tesla. Dealers are losing money because what they offered for the trade-ins few months ago are now several thousands lower. So dealers are either losing money or breaking even. So your Model 3 trade -in is either rejected or you probably don't want to hear the ridiculous low ball offer on your trade-in!!

We currently own all AWDs ICE: 1 audi Q3 2021, 1 Toyota Highlander Hybrid 2021, 1 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid 2018. Paying $200/month for insurance in WA 250k/500k & $2mil umbrella (+$30/month)

We are looking for replacing the Audi & Rav4 to Teslas.

Q1A) Which models suggest? *Best Winter Range* preferred!
one 7 seater AWD Tesla to replace Rav4 ?
one sedan M3 or MY to replace the Audi ?

Q1B) We live on Hills (harsh winter/ice/snow) - how are the suggested Tesla Models w/AWD fairs/compares on ice with Winter Tires & Snow Chains compared to those Toyota SUVs currently served us thru all prev snow storms?

Q1C) how much monthly insurance premiums or raise should we expect for the suggested model?

Q2) Enhanced AutoPilot sufficient for highway in WA and rural off-roads (like Wapato/Yakima?)

Q3) Also installing home charger - should we future-proof by install 2 stalls or 3 stalls now to save as bundle-build cost in future? Should we attempt install chargers & park them Teslas outside garages to prevent fire?

Q4) Heard about lack of parking sensors - should we wait for 2024 and beyond if HW4&later Tesla may brings back sensors? What differences between HW3 vs HW4 models currently on market?

Q5) extra misc: heard about Toyota 900 miles & charges in 10mins battery won't be on market until 2027ish. Does Tesla battery upgradeable from liquid-state (currently) to solid-state (future competition w/Toyota or ICE makers)? Or do we expect to completely replace the vehicles after owning it for 3-5 yrs (if battery-state-technology unexchangeable between liquid <#> solid)?

Appreciated your patience. Sorry about asking too many questions, from a traditional ICE family. Thank you.
Q1A) Test drive both, pick Long Range if you're considering it. I would choose a Model Y 7 seater, better to have it available in case you need it. As for whichever vehicle only you can determine that. I would personally get rid of the Audi and stick with Toyota's

Q1B) Tesla sells snow chains on their website, they work fine. I have only used my snow chains once in my 5 years of ownership of Model 3. I'm an essential worker so I was on the road when NYC declared only emergency vehicles were allowed on roads.

Q1C) Depends on where you live but you can find a VIN number (close to what you want in the car) online and call your insurance company to see how much it would cost to insure

Q2) Unsure, but Autopilot helps with driving fatigue on the long road trips.

Q3) You don't need enhanced autopilot unless you want the car to automatically change lanes for you (and other features). I would forego this option if money was a factor. You can always purchase this later in the app if you really want EAP.

Q4) Tesla shifted to Tesla Vision, there's pros and cons to sensors and no sensors. IMO I don't notice a difference. Not really sure this is really a deal breaker though. HW3 and HW4, currently I'm reading HW4 is behind on updates at the moment compared to HW3. There's more HW3 out on the road, it'll take some time before HW4 catches up. Also HW4 has better cameras than HW3.

Q5) Don't count on "future" in development tech like solid-state, etc. These are just articles and until these companies can mass manufacturer at scale it'll be a while. Toyota had once used Tesla batteries and motors for their RAV4 as a compliance vehicle in California. They didn't learn anything from that partnership and the Plugin-Hybrid Toyota released years later is lackluster compared to what's available from other automakers. Toyota invested tons in FCV / Hydrogen so they probably didn't want to abandoned that entirely. GM touted their Ultium battery platform back in 2018/2019? Look how long it's taken them to bring that to market.

From one EV owner to another, please learn how to 1 pedal drive well. You need to modulate the accelerator otherwise the lifting of the foot off the accelerator for that sudden brake sensation is not good for your passengers.

New model 3 refresh is supposedly better, but who knows when it comes out in the USA. More dual pane glass, upgraded suspension, and more sound insulation.
