Dell says display is 300 nits, for all the nit-pickers
Aside from 240hz being a bit overkill and the weight seems on the heavy side at 7.14 lbs, this looks like the power I want and the price is looking very tempting.
What I'm mostly concerned about is the thermals and other usability issues that aren't captured by the specs. Is alienware still one of the top gaming laptop companies? Do we think the price for high end machines with a 4070 will come down significantly in November? I'm a desktop guy and shopping for someone else so any info and experience is welcome.

Alienware is high end too, backed by the best warranty in the business. Arguably Alienware and Razer are the highest end in the gaming laptop segment of the big name brands. Lenovo's stuff is mid tier but a good bang for your buck, most of Asus' stuff is mid outside of the ROG line, which is most certainly high tier, and MSI used to be considered high tier but not so much anymore unless you go with their titans. They sell stuff at Walmart with GTX 1650s. Any Razer or Alienware you get is going to be expensive when they launch, all the others have a ton of entry level junk

Yes, Alienware and Razer are the highest end. Look at the comparison for higher end laptops and it's always a Razer blade vs an AW x-series.
Razer has the unibody design and OLED going for it, Alienware has better cooling and a vastly better warranty through Dell. Turnaround time for a Razer has been noted as months at a time, with Dell you can have someone come to your front door and repair within a matter of days.
I deal with them all. Dell is great for the warranty. Asus is typically great for their build quality in the ROG stuff (warranty is iffy). Lenovo makes mid-tier stuff that's built decently, but they shine in their Thinkpad lineup. HP…well I've never had a great experience with HP honestly, from personal to business class.
Where does it say it's free? If it's posted free on there and you don't get it, bring it to a CS manager rep's attention on the phone. They should be happy to fix it, if not just contact your CC company for it.
