Worried that the only non-"I got it for free in exchange for a review" review is one star.

Downside is, if you actually build it and it sucks, are you really going to dissemble it and return it?

So, we got this one last year when the price randomly dropped to $200 with free shipping:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/KidKra...om=/search

A few comments on quality, relative to the one listed in this deal:

1. 1 Year in, everything is holding up great. The wood is fading some, but I have no concerns with the swings, slide or ladder. That's not to say that I am not going to keep a close eye on it. Also, my kids are 4 and 2, so they are not abusing it...yet

2. The one listed in this deal has what I will call a "Pirate perch" - I am not sure I would be a fan unless the kid is over 3 and even then, with the quality of the wood from this company, I'd still be nervous.

3. With ours (and with this one) you can go on the Jungle website and get different attachments for much cheaper than KidKraft. We bought a toddler swing and a gymnastics bar that we swap out and the kids love it.

Overall, this is a great deal, but because of the "pirate perch" it might cause some to think twice because (imo) "closer" supervision would be warranted over a less "dangerous" set.

If you do a search for this model on reddit you will see that it is being discontinued because of the 10ft pirate perch + telescope combo. It starts a lot of beef with neighbors when kids spend all day looking into neighbors yards, 2nd floor windows or ground level windows normally obscured by a fence. Now said neighbors don't feel comfortable smoking a joint in their underwear in their backyard.

This is compounded by the fact the perch is dangerous and parents are inclined to supervise. So now parents are forced to supervise their kids trolling their neighbors. One person said she had to take it down because her autistic son would go up there and narrate out loud to her what was going on in neighbors homes and backyards.

The parents eventually feel bad and take it down with the intention of moving to less annoying location but come to the conclusion that the perch is more trouble than its worth and throw it out once disassembled.

So I would need to seal the wood and someone else said to heat the screws to avoid splitting? This is when a "deal" becomes a headache.

You SHOULD seal the wood even on the much more expensive sets out there. ACQ lumber isn't 100% waterproof and repeated direct exposure to elements will cause it to swell and contract and splinter and crack and eventually rot, too. Just the nature of the material.

Are you able to assemble it without the pirate perch?

In all seriousness, you're going to want to stake most of these sets down somehow, whether with sandbags over the supports or rebar driven into the soil. They're much lighter weight than what you might build from a lumber yard, but that's why they're $400 MSRP and not $2400 MSRP. Set your expectations accordingly, be ready to do a little maintenance, and at less than $150 shipped, it's going to be hard to beat without finding a steal at a yardsale or flea market.
No, I think it's completely worth the price if it only lasted a few seasons, which is how long most kids would even be interested in it. Only downfall for me would be the inability to move it around.

It looks like you could from the product photos, but you'd probably have two posts sticking straight up into the air since it looks like they run the full height of the play set. I'd say in the worst case you could saw the pirate perch off if you really wanted to.

Ah ok, I was having a hard time telling from the pictures. I think I'll assemble it as-is and remove the perch it's going to be an issue long term.

It's so inexpensive. The non wood parts alone would add up to this price. I admit that products from this company aren't the best as far as wood goes, but you could always replace beams with something sturdier for that price.

Based on the instruction manual, you could stop construction before adding the perch, but it looks like it would leave you with a set of rungs leading to the top rail of the swings and a free-standing slat-wall opposite them. You'd have to tie the walls together with your own boards and/or replace the rungs with vertical slats to prevent access to the top rail.
