I bought two fuego and couldn't figure out how to attach the reel handle. Different set up than most spinning reels. I've owned many Pflueger President's and they're still performing great after years of abuse.

For my money it's hard to beat the president spinning reel. I used to tournament bass fish and the pfuegers are the only brand that stayed smooth no matter what.

New Pflueger reels are not as good as the old ones. My presidents go into back reel mode when they get extremely cold and I have a few where the whole inners are noisy and hard to turn after 1 year of use.

Daiwa reels for me on the other hand have been great. Light and smooth and no issues in the cold.

great reels, great deal. though I'll say that each of the past two years, i've bought a President XT for like $50 from BPS/cabelas around Black Friday, so i might wait for that again.

edit: I really like my Lew's Carbon Fire Speed Spin [dickssportinggoods.com] and $30 is a heckuva deal.

Just bought two of the Pflueger President Spinning Combo (https://www.dickssportinggoods.co...rprsdntcom) for me and my 11 year old son, who is just getting into fishing. Primary use would be off the shore at a lake nearby, and possibly off the side of a boat once or twice a year as part of a chartered fishing tour. Was that a good choice, and if not, any recommendations? We are both fishing novices. His friends have been fishing a bunch of times this summer, and he wants to join them. I figure if I get one too, we might be able to go out together sometimes as well.

Also, I'll need line, weights, hooks, etc. Any suggestions for where to go for those?

Agreed!! The Lews carbon fire spinning reel at Dicks is half price if you can find one in stock. The 200 size is perfect for most freshwater use and the smaller 100 size would be great for ice fishing. 8 ball bearings from what I recall, so very smooth, but not quite as many as the super high end reels (that are $100 plus). Lews makes a great bait caster, but their spinning reel offerings are solid, especially the carbon fire and the Mach 2's - smooth drag. The regular price on the carbon fires is $80 or so....Dicks has them for $39 and change.

Any good light gear for tossing lucky crafts out in the surf?

I messed up my shoulder from my cheap setup that was way too heavy to cast out repeatedly. Lesson learned.
