Of course this isn't necessary for the average weekend player, but you can't beat an expert giving you the exact loft, lie, shaft flex and length that will be optimal for your own body type, stance, and swing profile. I haven't done this yet but I may be about ready for new irons, and the cost isn't as eye popping as I had assumed.

I started fairly young and didn't hit the ball very far or high. But the course I could walk to is basically carved out of the woods in a park, so I lost more balls than I cared to count as a kid. Now I hit the ball twice as far and as high as anybody, so I can lose balls even farther into the woods because I clear the first few trees before bonking three others.
I lose way less balls than I did when I was first learning. Not because I'm that awesome, but mainly because I can drive wherever I want now, meaning wide open courses that don't snake through forests are an option.
