If you are going to use the 20 lb tank I highly recommend you use one of the Mr. Heater fuel filters with any generic hose OR buy the hose F273704. Otherwise oil will leach into the fuel stream and more than likely clog and ruin your heater. Numerous videos and articles about this issue out there.

Maybe a decent deal, but I'll never order from Northern Tools again. They screwed over a bunch of Slickdealers including me last year. They advertised a free Milwaukee inflator with battery purchase. Then shipped just the batteries with no inflator (and no notification of order change). When confronted,v they claimed the free inflator was a mistake, despite the fact it was still advertised as an active promotion on their site. They wouldn't even pay return shipping for the batteries.

It's the only time in 25 years of buying stuff online I've had to dispute a charge with my credit card.

Sure, any company can make a mistake, but the handled it in the worst way and were downright hostile towards their customers.

Caveat emptor.

A word about the history of the fans. I got an older model that came with a fan. The fan went kaput soon after purchase. Around that time, they stopped shipping them without the fans for whatever reason. Maybe it was a supply issue or it could have been a reliability issue. Whatever it was, it was shipped without any design change meaning there it has an empty compartment for the fan and batteries. Not sure if that is still the case. That probably spurred many diyers to put in a fan as you can find on YouTube. I, myself, replaced the fan that could run both on D batteries or a USB source. I concluded it wasn't powerful enough to make much of a difference. I then attached a similar sized fan to the handle but runs on 120V. That didn't seem to make that much of a difference either. I've concluded that it really doesn't need a fan. It works great without a fan indoors. For outdoors, just put it close to use the radiant heat. So in conclusion, don't let the fan determine your buying decision. If you really want a fan, just use a separate more powerful fan you probably already own like one with the 20V tool batteries.

Correct-this is the way! If you have not used this kind of thing, this is most important.

The Big Buddy is rated for indoor use, whereas the one you linked isn't. Aka the Big Buddy is more efficient and therefore creates less CO. Fwiw it use the one you linked in my old leaky garage and it works great.

Thank you for this post! Mine came with a fan that promptly stopped working and I've always been salty about it. Great to know it's probably not useful anyway!

Any thoughts on using it to heat for my greenhouse in backyard ? Could be a fire hazard?

Fuel filter for propane???
The filter is for the oil that exists inside a generic hose.

You have a different model. That one has a fan, these DONT! I have the one with a fan and it's green. The red ones don't have them!
I own the red one and it has a fan and came with power adapter. I don't think color has anything to do with whether it has a fan or not. Just read the specs

This is from Mr Heater website "Due to recent governmental changes to import tariffs, Mr. Heater has removed the fan on some models of the Mr. Heater Big Buddy® (MH18B)"

Great!

Lots of comments here already from folks that have them so I'm give my input on mine. I've had it for 6 years so I have the older red model with the fan. Mine did not come with a power cord but I bought one on Amazon because I got tired of paying for D batteries and having it die. I have been on the fence about putting in a NG garage heater but this works so well that I never committed to putting one in. It heats up my 3 car garage (insulated/unheated) in about 30 to 45 mins from 50 deg to a comfortable 60ish deg. With the fan on and on high. I have mine plugged into a 30 lb propane tank with the hose adapter and the recommended fuel filter(which this post reminded me I probably need to change it his winter). Works awesome. No complaints at all. I even have a CO/fire Detector within 6 feet of it in the garage and NEVER detected any CO. Hope this helps!

Fake news. I have a red one with a fan that I bought last year from Lowe's. They are hard to find these days.

Many states and canada outlawed the fan model, FYI. And....

Really??

18,000 BTU Big Buddy Portable Propane Heater (No Fan),Red https://a.co/d/6sFcxi4

Funny how they dont anymore. It was outlawed in Canada and Massachusetts. So they don't make those models with fans anymore.
