Have both. The XM5 has better noise cancellation on planes. Considerable difference IMO. Bose are more comfortable and have better clarity. XM5 has better bass.

I bought them for $200 Black Friday 2022. I'd recommend them.
They sound great, the noise cancelling is very good, but not quite as good as my Sony XM4's. If you're putting away silverware or clank a glass, the Bose attempts to compensate and winds up sending a loud counter clank.
However, I cannot recommend any Sony's. The XM4 earbuds had the dead battery issue and my XM4 headphones have the random ear piercing squeal with ANC. Their quality control and reliability are not worth the risk.

I think I paid 200 for these at Costco last year? I'm no audiophile, but they're easily the best pair of headphones I have. Super recommend.

I have both. For me these are 10x better
1. I have tinnitus, my hears hiss 24/7 and the noise canceling makes it stop. So I LITERALLY wear them 18hrs a day. The all day comfort isn't even comparable. 45 are better
2. 45 have physical buttons which are a must for me. I won't even upgrade to the new bose because I like physical buttons.
3. Because of tinnitus I fall asleep with them on. The xm5 always activate on touch, the volume changes and stuff

MOST IMPORTANT the Bose you can change source from the headphones which is soooo important for me. Say I'm watching my Apple TV and someone calls on the phone, with the xm-5 you can't pick the phone. U gotta hope to get to the remote in time then mute it then hope it automatically switches. With the Bose, I literally have 8 devices set up and I can switch from the headphones.

The ONLY time I'd reccomend the xm-5 is for short 1hr MUSIC session. Like if someone said "listen to x new album" I'd probably pick up the xm-5
Wow really. XM4 just autoswitches to the call and pauses your music then resumes when done. Pressing a button doesn't sound great...

So does the Bose. I wasn't clear. Say u have 3 devices. A phone, laptop and AppleTV. The phone and laptop are connected. On the xm4 you'd have to have access to the phone to switch to Apple TV, on the Bose you can switch between 10 devices using the HEADSET. Also I like manually choosing my input as I'm usually watching nba on Apple TV but listening to music on my phone. On the xm-4 you can really only do that from the app

Are the XM5s noticeably lager than the Bose 45s? In practice do you notice it? I like that the Bose headphones can collapse down.

Any guesses as to whether Amazon will price match this? Considering signing up for a Costco membership but might pass if Amazon has these on sale

I've haven't owned the XM4 or XM5 but have owned the XM2 and XM3 and now the QC45s The QC45s are a lot more comfortable if you're planning on wearing them for more than an hour. So far I have used them on 2 trips, 2 hours and 4 hours and was able to wear them the whole time without any discomfort. I owned the XMs and even replaced the pads with Dekoni and they were still uncomfortable to wear. Sound quality isn't drastically different, aside from the XMs having more bass, which I don't really care for. I recently replaced the pads on my QC45 with Wicked Cushions Gel pads and are awesome. It does allow a little bit of noise in, but the extra comfort is night and day. Only issue is it will absorb a lot of sweat if you're using them in the gym or doing something where you will sweat a lot.

I tried this in-store today and it's super comfortable.
Curious how this compares to the newest QC:

Note: I bought the QC ultra, but my ears don't like it. It feels uncomfortable.
