They're not "new rules," as such, but new features only offered to models that meet certain requirements (power, mostly). They're probably more for power users (photo editing, for example) than students, but that would depend on the student and their interests.

You can read about it here [blog.google].

It seems 100% likely given they stuck Plus in the name. But as you can see it meets the major reqs:

CPU: Intel Core i3 12th Gen or above, or AMD Ryzen 3 7000 series or above
RAM: 8GB+
Storage: 128GB+
Webcamera: 1080p+ with Temporal Noise Reduction
Display: Full HD IPS or better display

Model name is: CB515-2H-31NY [acer.com]

That page confirms IPS display. Not sure about the camera.

Edit: Navigating from this page [acer.com] will get you to the exact model [acer.com]. It qualifies.

The i3-1215U is superior to the i3-N305 from the similar deal a couple days ago.

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/comp...el-i3-N305

Cache is arguable but 1215U has +4 MB of L3, it's significantly faster in single-threaded, a little faster in multi-threaded, and it has double the iGPU size (64 vs. 32 EUs).

Needs more RAM. Is RAM upgradable?
No and No.

I'm using a 4 GB Chromebook now. I want to go to 8 GB, but 4 GB still works.

Of course, if anybody offered upgradeable RAM in these bargain bin Chromebooks, we should jump on it. But you can only get that in an expensive Framework Chromebook AFAIK.

So what are these new chromebook rules that were mentioned earlier in the thread? We own a couple of Chromebooks but my kid is going to be needing a new one for school here at some point. Just trying to educate myself on these new Chromebook rules, etc before I make a purchase.

Chromebook Plus is like a premium version of the base ChromeOS that gets a few extra features, particularly related to AI, but only if the machine meets the minimum requirements listed in my first post.

https://blog.google/products/chro...book-plus/

https://www.theverge.com/2023/10/...nouncement

You also get a free 3 month subscription to an Adobe Photoshop (Web version) and GeForce Now, I guess.

They haven't even announced all the features yet, so more could be coming in 2024.

Now, their hardware requirements don't include a dedicated AI coprocessor, which are found in AMD's Phoenix and Intel's upcoming Meteor Lake chips. So why are they even doing this? It's a rebranding scheme to ensure the minimum specs needed for a good experience, and more cynically, to drive more sales. And they don't have to support this set of features on very old ChromeOS systems that are still within their support windows.

If they are slowing down adding or enabling features on regular ChromeOS, enabling them only on the "Chromebook Plus" systems instead, then it might be a good idea to board this train. Either way, it's a decent system for a reasonable price.

I don't have this laptop, but I have an Asus Flip CX5 with the same internal specs (1215u, 8gb, 128gb), and it is very speedy. It is listed as a Chromebook Plus model, and the new update even has it branded as such on the boot splash screen. I didn't see the bonus features available anywhere even with the latest updates. I've got zero complaints about it, but if you're new to ChromeOS, just know what you're getting into. If you mostly or always use web-based software (G Suite, Office 365, Canva, etc...), this will get the job done. I'm not a developer, so I don't use Linux or even the command shell, so I can't comment on that. I was thinking ChromeOS and Android would eventually merge into Fuchsia, which is how they can update Pixels for 7 years and Chromebooks for even longer, but that might get killed off too.

Just bought it after seeing this on a whim. Seems nice. Honestly it's a little flimsy. But it comes with a nice protective sleeve which was a nice add on that I wasn't expecting. The speakers seemed decent. For what it is, it seems great so far. if you need a simple Chromebook id get it.

For a little over $100 more also from Best Buy open box at $398 I can get this 16 inch 2 in 1 touchscreen. Can someone compare these two models for me please. I think I'd like to spend the extra money on the 16 in one instead since I wanted touch screen.

This is one without a dedicated delete key, FYI.

Yes, I know the key combination will work instead. Still not a fan of them omitting this key on many models.

I had a 14" touchscreen 2-in-1 Chromebook and hated the shiny screen. It reflected everything. So I went back to the regular 15" non-touch, non-2in1. It had a matte screen and was much more useful for me.
