There's really no necessary of routing a video signal through your sound system.(Except maybe convenience)
Unless you have an upper level/elite unit that would truly upscale/upconvert lower quality signals. It would be best to spend the money on a higher quality TV or monitor.
I personally stuck with 5.1 optical receivers and pipe the audio via the optical cable from TV to receiver. It's good enough for me. I've picked up a number of 5.1 optical receivers from shopgoodwill.com for an average of $29 shipped. Granted they are 20+ years old and don't have all the fancy audio adjustments. But sound and reliability are rock solid.
Here's some interesting reading... [cnet.com]

I bought the Sony on the reviews, particularly Sony's 360 feature. Got it set up and out of the box I was really unhappy with the sound for music (movies were great). So ran the sound correction and it got better, but it was real hit and miss. The sound to me was very thin and tinny on some tracks and there was seemingly reason why genre or format wise.
I kept trying and then the NR7100 went on sale and thought I'd give it a try. Right out of the box the Onkyo was more pleasing to my ears. The bass was a little bit boomy, but after running Dirac it was a lot better.
I will say the Sony UI is better and Sony's HDMI support is better. I'm still struggling to get the Onkyo/AppleTV/TV working well (I know it can work since my older Onkyo was fine) and the Onkyo does lose HDMI signal when switching between things like the Paramount+ menu and the content. I have a feeling this Onkyo is more sensitive to lower spec cables. (FWIW I actually bought two and both exhibited the same behavior)
So for purely movies the Sony over Onkyo? I am interested in the virtual speakers and spatial 360 that everyone raves about for movie watching.
