Very hard to beat this price for a 850 fill down bag. Too bad the mens went OOS so fast.

Keep an eye on REI. They are trying to pull out of some years of bad financial times and have been putting higher than average discounts on products when they go on sale. I've seen some other hardgoods at over 60% off, which was previously a discount they simply did not do (well, very rarely did).

I got the mens regular, arrived next day. It's super super light weight and not well filled. No way this would be warm below 45 degrees (as the reviews note). Also the regular size is super small. I'm 6' and couldn't even close to fit inside it, let alone zip it closed. Would fit a 5'9" 140 pound guy.

I'm returning it tomorrow so one should pop up. This would be good for warm summer only… it is light

All bags, not just this one, are rated at their "extreme / survival" temp -- its not their "comfort" temp -- typically a 30 degree bag will have a comfort temp around 45 which is where it is designed to be used. A 30 degree bag used in 30 degree temps would get you through the night alive in an emergency situation or with lots of layering, but thats it.
This isn't exclusive to this bag, it is the industry standard. Little misleading, but it is what it is. I run a bit cold and use a 15 degree bag often in the mountains in CO which is great for 30-40 degree overnight temps and of course I can unzip it if I need to. (I also have a quilt that I only use in the summer).

If you hammock at all, the quilt is on sale for even cheaper (it's short) and if great in a hammock. Perfect for summer night and UL in your pack.

How do men's and women's differ?
Most REI patrons have difficulty answering this question.

Shorter but biggest difference is wider in the hips and narrower in the shoulder. Some women's bags have extra insulation in the middle but it doesn't look like this one does.

The men's 30F bag is 40F comfort rating and 30F safety.

The women's bag has more fill and is actually 30F comfort rating.

Also note that ratings are based on wearing a baselayer.

I have the 30F men's bag and I was comfortable to overnight lows in the low 30s. Wore light baselayers at the start of the night when temps were around 45, with the bag slightly unzipped, and eventually pull on a beanie in the middle of the night and zip the big/mummy up more.

I'm sure could go even lower if I put my fleece on too

I still don't understand why they have to have a mens bag and a womans bag?? I honestly thought it was all the same ...

if it is the same as the one I got years ago, it is indeed comfortable down to below 30 with midlayers.

Exactly. There is a reason rei is failing at retail. They highest priced in an online competitive world. Why would I get this sleeping bag even at this "insanely low" price never seen when I can get a mountain hardware high end bag for same price via mountain hardware site sale? Even Gregory baltaro backpacks… rei has them for $226 in their clearance/outlet… for ages…but 2 seconds google shows als.com has them for $138-168… it's stuff like this. Or lowa Camino boots… rei had a 20% off coupon for them. Made it $290… but 2 min google and sportsman's had them for $178…

These days everyone is watching how they spend their money. We are supposedly lower middle class and we so squeezed we canceling apple one and only get these ancillary type products after googling to make sure we paying the best price offered in the market. Btw YouTube premium is great and comes with really good YouTube music and works on HomePods now w Siri… $13.99 mo for YouTube premium and music combined. Apple Music wanted $24 mo
So the women's 30 degree 850 down bag at Mountain Hardwear is listed $480. Are you really getting these and nicer ones for <$100 on sale?

I've never bought a sleeping bag before, but are they gender specific?

Just ordered a size women's regular for my 12 yr old son. It should fit his smaller frame well. At $90 and REI's return policy, this was an easy choice to make and if it doesnt work out, we'll make a stop at the store to return it.

Good info. I'd rather have a lot of 650 down than a little 850. If it only works well down to 50 degrees, I'd rather just have synthetic fill to not have to worry as much about moisture.
That's like saying I'd rather have a suv vs a convertible. Different use cases. High power fill is about weight not warmth. You can definitely have a 850 fill warmer than a 600 but two bags of the same weight and the 850 will be warmer. Nevermind getting into synthetic which is much heavier. That's fine for car camping but not for those really cutting grams for backpacking.
