Waiting for the 168pc for $99
If I was starting fresh today....
I'd go with one of the larger Husky or Hart kits that are around $100. As sales or specials come up add in a 3 packs of locking pliers (vice grips), adjustable wrenches (cresent wrench) and adjustable pliers, these 3 piece kits all hover around $20 and also a 5 pack of random pliers (needle nose, dykes, linesman, etc) and a multipack of screwdrivers. Then add in wrench sets and accessories as you see fit. Could be ratcheting wrenches, regular wrenches, socket extension kits, wobbles, and universals. After that fine tune your stuff as needed. Maybe some ratchets with a flex head, flexy wrenches, line wrenches, crows feet, ratcheting wrenches, offset box wrenches and so on. You will end up with a decent set of tools that can do most anything. A lot of those extras I mentioned are usually in the front of the store at Lowes/Home Depot around Christmas time for cheap. Additional fine tuning with Cobra pliers, stuby wrenches, good wire crimpers for example and specialty known quality tools as your budget and needs require.
Plz post if u find it

God I love the 168 piece set. Mine didn't come with that little yellow box when I purchased it back in 2017.

Would the 108-piece set be good for car emergencies (leave in car)? Or is there a better kit suited for that situation?

This one is pretty comparable for about $50: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky.../308802598

Best of luck!

I've this set since 2016 ($50 new from ebay seller) and got me through probably 95% of the time. I ended up buying the 226pc set with the Toughsystem medium box on a recent HD sale. I still go to the 108 pc set first as the set is a pain to look.

The 108 piece set has been on sale for under $50 twice so if you aren't in a rush I would wait to see if it gets back to that.

Hart and the Husky kits in this range are all decent kits. Comparable to the quality of the Dewalt kits and a lot cheaper. I've used the larger higher piece sets with 1/2 inch pieces that hover around $100 of each brand and they are more than enough quality for casual work. I've done engine/trans mounts, radiators, shocks, valve covers, brakes, fuel pumps and such and they are holding up fine. I have other specialized tools and a wider selection in my garage but where a tool in this kit is needed, it works fine.

Do these lugs fall out of the case or does everythung stay nice and tight?

For a home / garage kit - which is best , as I don't want a bunch of stuff I don't / won't need but also want to be able to tackle any of those little projects that may come up (like fixing a bike, or swing set or something on my car)?

I would say yes from a socket/screw driver perspective, but from the travel side you'd always want to throw in the stuff that is more likely to be used on a quick/temp fix, like: pliers, bailing wire, zip ties, duct tape, emergency tape, tire plugs.

I recently sent one to college and the zip ties in the glove box were clutch with the damage that was caused by an unexpected off roading event. Wink

The Dewalt cases are probably too tight actually. I need to use a screwdriver to pry them out usually; it's a pain in the ass. Maybe I need to wear the case down more or something.
