I have a pair of the 5" men's shorts. Comfortable, very lightweight, decent phone pocket, and pouches for fuel.

Don't have regular pockets though, so IMO not great for hiking/gym. I like REI's active pursuit 7" shorts for that usage.

p.s. a 7" inseam is not a running short.
Why is that (I'm not a runner)?

Friction. Extra fabric. 95% of people who define themselves as runner wear 3" or less.

Can you run in 7" or 5"? Yes, of course. Are those running shorts? Nah. Not in a true runner's world sense.

Courtney Dauwalter is out there setting ultramarathon records in 10"+ shorts. I prefer 5" in most situations but I also don't think it really makes much of a difference at all. Just run in whatever you're comfortable in.

Lol, I have 3 marathons over the past 3 years in shorts that are just above my knee.

Yeah, that's just silly. Real runners run. Smilie

I prefer ~5" generally, but the 7" version here has built-in boxer briefs. Score!
