I my area, we are paid $2.50 per order and tips usually range from $0 to $4. I've been doing this awhile and I generally won't touch an order unless it's a $3 or more tip or it's already on my way.
The federal mileage rate is 65.5 cents... That's what the IRS recognizes as your cost per mile. This takes into consideration your gas, insurance, maintenance, and registration.
If you have a 3mile order, it costs you about $2 to drive it. It also costs you $2 to drive back to your work area. In some areas there is enough going on where you can bounce back and forth, but a lot of us generally return to our area after. This means our cost to deliver is $4 and we are only making $1.50-$2.50 for this order (yes, we see more since we are liquifying an asset in the process). It usually takes 10-40min to deliver an order. I can usually get 4 an hour... Can get up to 7 once you get into double orders! Some hours I sit in my car and make nothing, though. There's no hourly pay, just that base $2.50 per order. Many orders need to be declined - I can't tell you how many ask you to drive 10 miles out for $5.50.🤣 We'd literally be paying for the privilege. After calculating cost, you've got to look at what you're actually bringing in. At best, I can get near $20/hr... But again, I've also sat in my running car with the AC on and technically paid to waste my time.
Sometimes, we get a double order. The wait isn't much longer and the miles not much further, but the added order is nearly all profit. Sometimes we get bonuses: $1-$2 per order more.. Again, pure profit! Sometimes someone will give us a very generous tip. It's much appreciated and really helps out. Other times, you get lost in hotels, places with no cell reception, searching through apartment complexes in the dark or stuck in a drive thru for an hour.
You pay nearly double the % in taxes since you're an independent contractor, but you can write things off too.
It's kind of fun, I enjoy it. It's like fishing, logistics, some physical activity and a video game all in one. You're not going to get rich but I used to just like getting out of the house and driving around some nights... Windows down, music on, enjoy the peace. I'm basically doing the same and getting paid for it. Add in the benefits of choosing your own hours and being able to turn any job down, and it doesn't feel so much like work.
