For verizon phone, no need to keep the line open for 60 days,
1. you can activate the phone on new line
2. Pay off the phone via customer service or in cash at verizon corporate store.
corporate stores are inclined not to take payment in cash. they may be aware of what folks are doing . thus they try to make it hard for you.
if corporate store denies u. politely but firmly insist u spoke with rep of verizon. and they assured u this can be done in corporate store. if still denied, ask for manager. if still denied, go to another corporate store.
3. cancel the line within 3 days and no activation fee . Pro-rated charges for line for 1-2 days only. do not worry about what bill says.
4. Phone will be automatically unlocked in 60 days. No matter you use it on existing VZN line or keep it in drawer . even if u r no longer a customer , since u cancelled in three days. the phone will still unlock.
5. new customer, there will be a credit pull .most likely hard. existing customer. most likely a soft credit pull. remember this is post paid service.
6. if existing customer. consider: adding a line. then follow steps above, u can also simply port out the line u opened up. effectively cancelling the line. and not effect the other lines
share my experience from sd user.
I am not a current Verizon customer.
I ordered from Walmart Sunday (10/29) night.
Tax was $3 and change.
Phone arrived today (10/31 tuesday).
Activation was easy and basically completed by the phone itself with a new number.
I then set up an account on Verizon.com.
There already a bill in the system for a little more than $120 for activation, month of service and taxes.
Next bill estimate showed about $80.
After playing with the phone a few hours, I contacted Verizon by chat to cancel the account to make sure I am not charged an activation fee and so that Verizon only bills me the prorated use amount for 1 day.
Long story short, Verizon waived the activation fee, charged the full $36 for the phone and gave me a random credit that did not cover most of the monthly fee and taxes.
I think at first, they wanted a total of about $70 ($36 plus like $34 in fees).
I told the representative that made no sense given that I am cancelling the account within 1 day so the prorated cost should be about 3 or 4 dollars at most.
Chat representative gave me the run around but started applying what appeared to be random discounts.
At the end of the chat and subsequent follow up phone call, I was able to get the service fee reduced from $34 to $0.
Frankly, this was more trouble than it was worth.
Given that Verizon's unlock policy automatically unlocks the phone upon purchase (as opposed to activation), I expect this phone will unlock in 60 days

Activated it that night and spent pretty much the next day doing the 20 updates/patches. Went into a Verizon corporate store first thing Friday morning and paid it off in cash (only option for this phone). They will show you that it is paid off on their screen and give you a receipt.
Note: I also paid off the remaining amount on my Google Pixel 6 Pro from a year a half ago so I'd be ready for any good trade-ins this holiday for a Pixel 8 Pro (credit card payments were allowed for that).
Later that afternoon i signed onto my account and contacted Verizon Customer Chat and cancelled the new line on my account. Customer service said there shouldn't be an activation fee but put a note for it to be credited if it does appear. Pro-rated for 2 days of service.
Easy Peasy. Now to wait 60 days for it to unlock.
Does anyone know if Tracfone SIM (Verizon) work in this phone while it is locked??
Update 8:00AM 11/172023 : and the 20th update has FINALLY begun. Seriously ANNOYING process.
Update 8:30am 11/17/2023: AND THE 20th and final UPDATE Process is completed.
RIDICULOUS. Almost a day later.
They should really make the whole process auto-update itself an option. instead you have to check back on the phones and hit downoad....and then it restarts...and you hit install....then the phone reboots (sometimes multiple times for 1 patch). repeat 20+x
Yeah, was pissed to have it activated just after having it shipped. Must be new line vs upgrade?
Then shipping is so freaking slow nowadays-only these take a week for fedex home and usps always gets stuck another day sitting on the other side of town.

i got the phone today and i had chat with agent to cancel the line, the agent in the chat, told me , they will go a head and cancel the line and the $36(device cost) will be added to final bill which i can pay later.
my line got disconnected with in few hours of receiving of phone, and they said i will receive a final bill soon. ..did not have to pay off the device to get it disconnected. device payment will be applied in final bill. which will be available on 18th Dec
received email confirmation of disconnection and mobile network shows x mark and does not make calls. so it is disconnected.
----UPDATE:-----
i got a bill of $94, called them, and asked for a credit adjustment, so that i am left with only the device payment cost, the rep pn call did that promptly with in 4 minutes of the call. and now i am left with payment of just the device cost only.
The CS rep did try to tell me I had to keep the service for 1 month at first. I pushed back and then she told me she had to speak to supervisor for alternative options.
