I usually pay $40 for 35lb on Amazon; has been my goto for the last few years. Guess I'm not gonna pass up 40lb for $38

This is an okay deal. It's been $40 shipped for 35lb from Home Depot for quite a while as well

Kamado Joe XL is more of a mixed bag in terms of smaller pieces & other junk mixed in. I have less experience with JD but I'd definitely choose it before Kamado Joe XL based on past experience l.

Should NEVER pay more than $1/pound for this. Stock up when it get to or dips below that threshold; it does several times a year at different retailers.

Big Block is not great, especially as of late (dust and small pieces & many have reported a chemical smell/taste). JD is the best of the best, hands down.

It's good but I disagree that it's the best of the best. I prefer FOGO over JD. It's usually a bit more expensive.

JD is much more readily available and a bit cheaper. So I typically use it when I haven't found a decent price on FOGO.

Should add free shipping with Walmart plus. Doesn't have to be $35.

Is there a point in branded charcoal? Isn't it all the same?

they are not the same.

size, size consistency, wood species and quality, amount of fillers, amount of fines, amount of moisture leading to sparks...

they all are factors of how well you control the heat, and the flavor you get out of them. If you are flipping costco patties for 10 minutes, per side like a freak, then sure it won't matter

The comments about this only being a so-so price (e.g., relative to Amazon) are fair, at least from a purely dollars-per-pound perspective. Having said that, I find the bigger, heavier bags to be more of a hassle, so two 20-pound bags that are cheaper than one 35-pound bag is a deal worth finding out about and, at least for some of us, worth taking advantage of.

Thanks OP. Heard of, but never tried Jealous Devil. Picked up 3 bags. I'm a pretty loyal Rockwood guy as I think it is the best of all I've tried. I use it almost exclusively for all long cooks, but I pick up B&B when on sale for $12 a bag and use for burgers, steaks, dogs, etc. as it is cheap and gets the job done with mild smoke. Hopefully this is as good as people say and maybe it can knock Rockwood off my #1 pedestal.
