The fact that the speakers (dock) can't be used as a standalone Google Nest speakers blows my mind and keeps me from making this purchase. It makes no sense to me why it requires the tablet to be on the dock to play music.

This is sooooo tempting - slap Home Assistant on this and find some magnets that stick to the wall with a charger attached to an outlet, and you got yourself a bonafide smart home hub that you can carry around and be like Tony Stark if you want, or I guess you could just stick it to the fridge? Either way, pretty cool

The magnet is a no-brainer and I can't believe no one has thought of it yet. I can't wait to see Apple steal this idea in 3-4 years and all of the kool-aid drinkers call it revolutionary when it hits the iPad.

You realize you can do this today with a tiny $50 home hub right? You don't need this much processor or screen or huge dock for automation....

We have 4 home hubs mounted across the house, full zwave& wifi across lights, ac, blinds, tv, speaker systems, fans, 18 cameras...

You don't buy this tablet for home automation.... you buy this tablet if you want something that has horsepower for games while also can dock on the counter for recipes without having another dedicated counter device.

Any tablet for the past 5 years can stream any video just fine....

A 2:1 laptop can be had easily for under $500 if you need productivity

To be honest.... not sure why tablets are still seeing innovation.... all use cases/workloads have peaked ...

Because the dock is literally just a speaker with a USB-C DAC and charging pass-through in it.

To do what you're asking would require a Bluetooth receiver in addition to the USB-C DAC.

But it doesn't stop there, right? Because the next thing you would expect is a perfect handoff of audio each time you remove or place the tablet on the dock.

In order to facilitate that, a custom codec would have to be created, as the default SBC codec always has a brief silence when output changes.

A custom automatic task that always runs in the background to make sure Bluetooth is turned on whenever the tablet is placed in the dock would also need to be created, if they aren't already managing aspects of that (like turning off auto pairing when the device is docked).

When all is said and done, it adds another $100-200 to the MSRP for a feature you probably wouldn't actually use all too often.

They can still make a bluetooth receiver that's magnetically connected to the dock but didn't.

As the tablet is not gaining a large user base there's little hope for a 3rd-party solution so far.

Nothing to do with this tablet but Google nest as a whole needs to be sold off or ripped away from Google, it's products have fallen behind and they haven't innovated in years. Nest products. The nest cam outdoor was just terrible. What are the hundreds of employees even doing?

I'm pretty sure the Nest speakers play audio through WiFi. I just want to be able to use it as a nest speaker when not docked

Check out hipaint no on android. A procreate clone.
Thanks for the suggestion. I checked it out, but the reviews are not great. Others have also mentioned HiPaint is the closest thing to Procreate on an Android tablet, which again for me, further solidifies my only justification to get an iPad. There simply isn't an app on the Play Store as good as Procreate.

Updates run out in June of 2026 while security patches cease in June 2028. Here's all of the schedules:
https://www.droid-life.com/2023/1...t-updates/ [droid-life.com]
Considering this is Google's own Tensor G2 chip and the new Pixel 8 phones (which use the newer Tensor G3) will get version updates through 2030, I wonder if Google will push out this tablet's updates to match? Or perhaps the next version of this tablet will get the extended updates? That's a huge influence on my decision making. My understanding is that Android updates have been limited by how long the processor manufacturer (typically Qualcomm) was willing to support updates.

Tablet looks cool but the dock thing is not something I want. Tried a smart speaker for awhile. Google home is creepy. It hallucinates you talking to it among other things. I have enough of this crap with my phone already.

I would wait for $250, but I highly doubt the price would be anything better than this even on BF. Google still thinks this tablet is very high on their flagship stuff. SO, it is not likely they drop it further. BTW, I have Google store credit to burn. I'm not sure they expire, will check.

Nexus 7 was such a champ. Perfect size too. We flashed that thing with a new ROM a few times a year and it ran great for 8 years until it stopped charging.

Then came the Nvidia Shield. Had that for another 7 years before it stopped charging.

They don't make them like they used to, and, yes, I am including the OnePlus Pad in that generalization
Loved my Nexus 7. That was my favorite tablet of all time and the Moto X was my favorite phone of all time.
