you can make a bypass button; use as bookmark on phone and computer.
Mine is like this:
http://pi.hole/admin/api.php?disable=60&auth=

Disables pihole for 60 secs.
Your auth would need to be generated.

If you are buying this to run services or desktop replacement, just go with an Intel n95 or n100 mini pc. They are still 2x faster than the pi 5 and 4-5x faster than pi 4. By the time you buy a case and storage and power supply for the pi 5, you could just have a better mini pc that runs windows or any Linux version and you don't have to buy more for it.

Pi hole blocks all the links from slickdeals. Is there a fix?
Not all of them but many. If a link is blocked, I don't visit the site or I find it by going to the site directly.

Kinda defeats pihole if you whitelist tracking urls.

Needs a temporary bypass button instead.
I use Pi-Hole Remote on iOS. It's an app that allows me to easily access the pihole and temporarily disable it as needed.

Yes, the best fix is to install the "skip redirect" plugin in your browser. This gets you to the correct link by skipping the garbage tracking links. Greatly helps for privacy as well.

Don't need to spend $60 for running Pi-Hole. That works on even raspberry pi zero.
See the comment I left for the other guy pointing it out. Didn't say you had to spend $60. Don't spend anything and run it on your Windows or Mac OS using Docker. I was simply saying there is a reason some people like SBCs.

It used to be a no-brainer to get the newest pi back when they were in the $30 price range. Just buy a few and have them on hand when projects would come along. Prototyping is less painful than on arduino (just edit python code and relaunch rather than having to compile and upload).

But now, the pi 5 is now entering the price range where if you don't need the GPIO then an SBC would be a better option. And the added cost makes it harder to justify purchasing unless I have a planned project.

what are these even good for nowadays
For GPIO stuff you're often better off running an Arduino-like board. But the Pi can do it with some on-system intelligence which could be better in many instances.

The Pi 4 8GB was decent enough as a Linux desktop for casual use when built with an SSD. The Pi 5 is 2x faster and should be a pretty good user experience with a lightweight desktop environment..

Their niche is really as an appliance, though. It's powerful enough to run apps 24x7 with little power consumption. Use Docker, k3s, or micro k8s and set up containers for various functions around the house. You could easily Home Assistant as your automation hub, have a NAS for backups or cloud sharing, run DNS filtering, etc.

If you want virtual machines, that's where the off-lease desktop minis, the newer mini pcs, and the nucs come to play.

How is the retro emulation on this better over the pi4?
yes but in front of even a modest intel N100, all SBCs are dog slow.

wait, Reolink doorbell with HomeKit? tell me howwww!!
https://www.scrypted.app/

I run it in a portainer, it brings my Reolink doorbell and Tapo cameras in to HomeKit and allows HKSV. Tapo cameras use the ONVIF plugin, Reolink has its own plugin but I've just been using the doorbell via ONVIF.

5 needs active cooling or a big heatsink.
Yeah, that kinda makes it worthless to me. The older Pi had a niche but now you can find a cheap NUC or simpler board.

I run pihole on a 3B+ with only 1GB of RAM, this is overkill for pihole alone.
Even dockstar with armel CPU 128mb mem will run pi-hole

I'm tempted but I already have 3 on preorder that will presumably arrive some day in next couple months.
