Does anyone use these and have a bird in the home? The nonstick coating heating up and putting off toxic vapors that can kill birds really worries me. I think the coating has to be heated up to a fairly high temp (not normal use) for this to happen, but I'd really hate to kill my bird. Hoping someone has experience. Thank you

We have a maximilian pionus and a cockatiel that live in the combined dining room / kitchen area, and we use T-Fal cookware. We do take several precautions, though;
  • We never let cookware sit on the stove while turned on without something in it (oil, some kind of food, etc.). Having something in the pan helps keep it from overheating.
  • We never cook at higher than medium heat (that's a good practice anyway since it lengthens the useful lifespan of the cookware).
  • In the rare case that we accidentally burn some food or the T-Fal pan gets too hot, we hastily relocate the birds to the back bedroom, shut the door, crack the window, and turn on a fan.
If you're the scatterbrained type like my sister and are multitasking 30 things at once, it may be too much of a risk. If you generally stand over top of whatever you're cooking and are always keeping the birds in the back of your mind, I don't think it will be an issue.

We've had the same birds for over a decade, and honestly, we weren't that careful with cookware in the early days (we didn't know the risks). Nevertheless, the birds are doing just fine.
