If you don't want to spend $50 on a water filter, contact GE customer support and they will send you a free bypass plug.
You can then use the bypass plug to use your unfiltered cold fridge water or you can cut the RFID tag out of the bypass plug and tape it in the water slot. After you tape it in, you can purchase third party water filters for much cheaper (I use the Waterdrop brand). The fridge will think the bypass plug is being used, although the water will actually be filtered through the third party filter.
One tip about cutting the RFID tag out, use a Dremel or multi tool to cut the hard plastic. If you try peeling the sticker, the RFID tag will break. GE engineered the RFID tags to tear on the bypass plug and water filters if you try to remove them.
After you install the third party water filter, the fridge won't give you a reminder to change the filter, because it doesn't think a filter is being used. So leave yourself a note to change it every ~6 months.
… or install and inline filter and use the bypass plug…
I swear refrigerators are getting more and more bulbous every year. They look ridiculous in kitchens. Even some of the "counter depth" refrigerators are blatantly false before they get to the 6" thick doors.
I looked at it at Lowe's. It's actually $1399 there locally. It is made in Mexico. What else is new? At least not China, I guess. I think the Whirlpool too was made in Mexico.

I've been waiting and looking for a "more reliable" counter depth fridge! Prefer no water dispenser on the doors as I hear its just pain down the road when it need fixing etc… any suggestion or decent deal in the low 1K range? TIA!
I have a very similar model 5 years ago for $1350. It's pretty much the same down to the size and interior components except the is no internal water dispenser on this model.
My problems with this model? The alarm that is used to tell you your doors are open broke around year 4, and lately it's not cooling as well as before. Sometimes pulling the plug for a few minutes will reset the thermometer, but we shouldn't need to do this.
Ever pull it out and clean the coils? Might be user error/neglect. Should be done or at least checked yearly. Also make sure there is adequate spacing from walls and top/cabinets. Doing this will extend the life, efficiency, and quietness of the fridge. Hope this helps your situation.

Mine has constant drain issues. I have to put a tube in there and suck it out. The coils are uncleanable, hidden inside of a cylinder. Anyway just fyi
We recently purchased the GE like this with the water pitcher in the inside and it's a farking game changer. There was nothing slick on the pricing but it is worth every penny. The amount of space in the door bins without the door water is incredible.

It's not the greatest fridge but the best I could find at lower prices....There are a few complaints with it like all fridges, potential water dispenser issues, a bit noisy while running, waste of space inside fridge, less drawers, less shelves, & maybe potential cooling issues in a few years -- (same potential problems now on all fridges)...I'm coming from a larger 13 year old surprisingly decent Samsung 27cu, so I know what they mean by less space. But I have more than 1 fridge in the house so wasn't an issue for me.
I purchased it at Home Depot, but it's also at Lowes. Definitely not as nice as the fridge in this deal, so if you still like this one better, then this is only $300 more at Lowes. Also the fridge is Made in Mexico, with Lousville, KY also written on label.
Reliability with all fridges is a pita these days, so I wouldn't be surprised if the fridge I chose has problems within 5 to 7 years like someone else mentioned above. That will suck of course: headaches, waste of time, and costly repairs.
**My current complaint with GE fridges are their $50 computer chip water filters, or else your water is shutdown every 6 months or less; the water filter plug to bypass water filter, mentioned by above poster is our only hope, great advice from damicomj...But I've heard it is very difficult to trick the fridge and use other brand filters...so this may be a struggle while owning all GE fridges. Extra Cost will be between $55 to $100+ per year to access the water&ice dispensor depending on usage.

thats because of government energy standards requiring more insulation and yet people still want to have a fridge that will hold a reasonable amount of food

Thank you! Looking for a cheap fridge. This looks like the best option. Appreciate it. Looks like Costco has it for $100 with 1 extra year of warranty.
difficult to find a good and reliable fridge in the price range of $1100 to $1500. This is very good price for what you get. (I ended up playing it safe and downsized to the GE 25.3 side by side for $1100--it may also be made in Mexico, but has Kentucky written on it too.).
But of course, As with all fridges no matter the price, is it going to last over 8+ years, ideally 12 years or more?
only time will tell.
"Is designed in Kentucky, assembled in Mexico" the new "designed in California, assembled in China"? 🤔
I don't care about water nor ice. Rather not have either, just another thing to break. Only interested in high capacity (volume). Why isn't this a better option at $1030. and 28cu ft?
No external water or ice makes this a deal breaker for those with families. Over 90% of fridges have this for a reason as it is a highly sought after feature

Have you vacuumed the condenser coils? Most people don't for their fridge.

Edit- it apparently does include the ice maker but not a *dispenser*
