This system uses the heat of the LEDs for that purpose. They also give you little clear plastic domes to put over the pods when germinating to create a tiny little greenhouse right at the seed. Seems to work well enough for most plants. I get pretty close to 100% germination on commercial seeds. (this is not counting my chives where I somehow got over 100% because counting to 5 is apparently harder than I thought...)
