This is a good deal. In June '23 I paid $1199 at Best Buy for M2 13.6" w/512gb (8gb).
At $1250 for 512gb, this feels like a better deal.
I'd buy this 15" / 512gb M2 if I was in a buying cycle.

For comparison, in Mar '23 I paid $1499 for 14" M1 Pro 16gb/512gb
It's a good machine but I overpaid.

Apple's whole game is planned obsolescence. 8gb of RAM is "fine" until it isn't because of their product road map (driven entirely by profit for shareholders)

Caveat emptor.

I was strongly considering getting an M1 Air, but ended up with a Dell business laptop refurbish from woot for $160. Upgraded the memory to 16gb ($23) and put in a 2GB NVMe drive ($60). It's fast enough for everything but gaming.

Scored an M1 Mac Mini for $300 from a local buyer which seems to be where the real value is...

Is 8GB still enough nowadays in 2020s? If need to run an Android emulator.
I wouldn't recommend 8gb when you need to do emulation/virtualizatuon personally unless you only need to run a single VM at a time and nothing else.

Also, Just a heads up I haven't had a lot of luck with android VMs on MacOS as most of the best standalone ones aren't well supported on apple silicon ( unless you are talking about android studio for your own applications, that is supported). If anyone has a suggestion for this outside of android studio I'd love to hear it.

This is one of the reasons I don't like Apple. In many ways the hardware is so good but I can't help but feeling like they know they can cheat me on the price of what is typically a commodity item (RAM, HD). Consider that I just bought a 2T WD black SSD for around $100. Apple wants $200 for a paltry upgrade from .25T to .5T.

My wife has been a Mac user for a while and I appreciate that the previous Macs really held up. Her current Mac is 10 years old. However, more memory/HD are two things that can really extend the life of a computer and those are two things Apple locks you out of. It makes it really hard for me to willingly hand over so much cash for a system that is already gimped at time of purchase. Yes, you can get soldered Windows machines. In fact I have an HP "Surface" with such limitations. But when it was released in 2017 8gb, 256gb were more impressive and for the same money I could have decided to go for a different laptop with more upgradability for the same money. When you add it Apple's decidedly unfriendly right to repair efforts it's just so much harder to want to buy a current Apple computer even though I like so much about them (great track pad, very good screens, decent keyboards on the latest models, very good battery life).
Look into framework, you might like em

Seems like a decent deal
Nothing special since these machines will not move at list price. There have been open box ones I think they were 900 at Best Buy nearly new. The prices can only go lower since laptop sales fell off a cliff. Apple is down 30% recently in volume. Expect some sharp Christmas deals.

Actually even $1 more. At Costco it's $1049.
Costco is the better deal. One extra year warranty from Costco, better return policy. Also Chase freedom 5x back currently

If the condition is good, that's a steal. New M1 MBAs are going for that price, so for a 15 inch M2 MBA with better performance, go for it

Thank you. I am considering getting it for my father in law who is not great with computers and has very basic needs. It sounds like I should jump on it. I appreciate your help, kind internet stranger!

I have this in 16gb. feedback
- m2 is ofc excellent for mobility. battery life cleans the floor with pc easily. processor is speedy enough and good clean performance. I would definitely get 16gb but I would not feel handicapped at 8gb because quite frankly if you are desperate for ram why are you doing that kind of work on a tiny mba?
- there's some wierd mba things. most notably is shockingly poor support for more than one monitor. anything more than that you have to buy an expensive hub (like $200). also doesn't support things like dell usb c chaining.
- and of course, the ports. you get two. that's it.
