Available Retailers:About this item:
  • Wouldn't you like to live longer? And better? In this operating manual for longevity, Dr. Peter Attia draws on the latest science to deliver innovative nutritional interventions, techniques for optimizing exercise and sleep, and tools for addressing emotional and mental health.
  • For all its successes, mainstream medicine has failed to make much progress against the diseases of aging that kill most people: heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and type 2 diabetes. Too often, it intervenes with treatments too late to help, prolonging lifespan at the expense of healthspan, or quality of life. Dr. Attia believes we must replace this outdated framework with a personalized, proactive strategy for longevity, one where we take action now, rather than waiting.
  • This is not "biohacking," it's science: a well-founded strategic and tactical approach to extending lifespan while also improving our physical, cognitive, and emotional health. Dr. Attia's aim is less to tell you what to do and more to help you learn how to think about long-term health, in order to create the best plan for you as an individual.

To ward off the "four horseman" of health issues (heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's, diabetes), take note of the following:

1) exercise is very very very important
2) focus on "healthspan" not lifespan
3) improve your diet but don't go too crazy. Focus on exercise
4) sleep is important
5) mental health is important.

Book basically says the above and cites a bunch of evidence. Oh and the author swam from mainland to Catalina island and then his wife called him fat lol

Good book but I agree, a bit over inclusive and meandering.
Thanks! I have been eyeing this book for awhile. Getting it as an ebook likely means I'll forget I have it and never read it.
Peter Attia is a legitimate figure in his field. Entering my 30s has really forced my perspective on the topic of longevity. I no longer feel the invincibility of youth like I did in my teens and twenties so this book was perfect in learning how to prolong my lifespan and have a lengthier healthspan.

So far I've been doing my best to limit intake of processed foods. Exercising 4-5 times a week. 8 full hours of sleep. Supplement regimen is fish oil, vitamin D, mushroom extracts, testosterone booster, and Athletic Greens powder. Slowly implementing more things from the book as my budget allows.

There is also an awesome discussion of diseases and treatments. The section on cardiovascular is awesome. The information on cholesterol is described in a such a manner that anyone can understand it. The high cholesterol treatments are discussed very well. I was able to discuss my treatment options with my primary. He was not familiar with advanced treatments that I discussed so he referred me to a cardiologist. Cardiologist prescribed PCSK9 inhibitor that was very effective in my treatment. It brought down LDL significantly resulting in total cholesterol from 300 to 190.

I first borrowed this from the library. I found its contents so compelling an important that I bought it on Kindle later. Then I went and purchased a hard copy version for my parents. There's nothing groundbreaking here, but it really hits home. The importance of some of the things other posters have mentioned here. Definitely worth $2.99

Do I really need a book to tell me to exercise more, get enough sleep, and stop drinking?
Maybe, unless you are already exercising enough, getting enough sleep, and avoiding alcohol...

I enjoy his ubiquitous presence on YT, but I put down the book when he started praising vaccines. It was a huge disappointment that Peter didn't take a more balanced approach in light of the past few years.
Be careful who you listen to. We would be back in the throes of polio, etc. within a generation or two if Kennedy and others had their way.

You can do all the "right things" for your health, and yet people die from car accidents, falling off ladders, and even stray bullets. Yes, we have control over some of the aspects of our lives, but not close to all.
Technically you have control over all of that aspects of your life. Don't drive, don't go on a ladder and live in a house that is bullet proof. You get the idea, but honestly this is a pointless point to make to begin with.

Quote from ratbastard :
I never stated that one shouldn't try to live a healthier life. I was basically making a factual statement about how we don't have complete control over our fates. Accidentally deaths are the fourth highest cause of deaths in the country, which includes violence, poisoning, and falls. As in all things, quality over quantity. Make the years count, and don't focus on just surviving for a long time.
If the years count, then you should absolutely care more about this book, because it also increases the quality of your life in the immediate future.
