Various Retailers have Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity by Peter Attia MD (eBook) for $2.99.

Thanks to community member phoinix for finding this deal.

Available Retailers:About this item:
  • Wouldn't you like to live longer? And better? In this operating manual for longevity, Dr. Peter Attia draws on the latest science to deliver innovative nutritional interventions, techniques for optimizing exercise and sleep, and tools for addressing emotional and mental health.
  • For all its successes, mainstream medicine has failed to make much progress against the diseases of aging that kill most people: heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and type 2 diabetes. Too often, it intervenes with treatments too late to help, prolonging lifespan at the expense of healthspan, or quality of life. Dr. Attia believes we must replace this outdated framework with a personalized, proactive strategy for longevity, one where we take action now, rather than waiting.
  • This is not "biohacking," it's science: a well-founded strategic and tactical approach to extending lifespan while also improving our physical, cognitive, and emotional health. Dr. Attia's aim is less to tell you what to do and more to help you learn how to think about long-term health, in order to create the best plan for you as an individual.

To ward off the "four horseman" of health issues (heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's, diabetes), take note of the following:

1) exercise is very very very important
2) focus on "healthspan" not lifespan
3) improve your diet but don't go too crazy. Focus on exercise
4) sleep is important
5) mental health is important.

Book basically says the above and cites a bunch of evidence. Oh and the author swam from mainland to Catalina island and then his wife called him fat lol

Good book but I agree, a bit over inclusive and meandering.

Thanks! I have been eyeing this book for awhile. Getting it as an ebook likely means I'll forget I have it and never read it.

Peter Attia is a legitimate figure in his field. Entering my 30s has really forced my perspective on the topic of longevity. I no longer feel the invincibility of youth like I did in my teens and twenties so this book was perfect in learning how to prolong my lifespan and have a lengthier healthspan.

So far I've been doing my best to limit intake of processed foods. Exercising 4-5 times a week. 8 full hours of sleep. Supplement regimen is fish oil, vitamin D, mushroom extracts, testosterone booster, and Athletic Greens powder. Slowly implementing more things from the book as my budget allows.

Fantastic book and framework for thinking about healthspan vs simply lifespan. Highly recommend. His podcast is also great if you want to deep dive on the science.

It's a very long and laborious read that is a very mixed and disorganized collection of very very early associations/correlations. I wish he summarized each chapter better because after reading it I came out with minimal action items.

I don't typically buy audiobooks, as I can listen to them for free from the local library. However, I spent $40 for this one when it first came out, because the information in it was so valuable. I'm a healthy 43 year old now is the prime time for me to take the necessary steps to ensure that I stay healthy well into my golden years.

For $3, this life changing ebook is a steal.

Both of you are spot on. I picked this up as an Audiobook and it was a tough listen despite how much I enjoy listening to him on YouTube and Podcasts. It felt disorganized and there was some random shit like you said with his swim lol.

Some good information sure, but not an easy read/listen by any means. If you're on the fence I'd ask yourself if you'd honestly want more on what @Lukkie or @magic168 said. If yes, can you both organize the information yourself through someone else's mind and justify paying for it? If you can truly say yes, then this might be worth it for you...otherwise, a quick summary will do the same and save you a few bucks.

It's all about avoiding sarcopenia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarcopenia

Here's a long interview with Sam Harris where he lays things out convincingly with the help of probing questions:

good for you. I've got some decades on you, but I've recently become committed as well.

Do I really need a book to tell me to exercise more, get enough sleep, and stop drinking?

Yes and pretty much every American does. If they actually follow it. It does discuss what exercise to do and what to focus on for eating.

1. Exercises
A. Strength training 3x per week
B. Zone 2 cardio at least 200 mins a week 80% max HR
C. Zone 5 cardio 1x per week
D. Stability training
2. Diet
A. 1g of protein per lb of body weight
B. Stay away from crap foods.
3. Heart health is important
A. Current testing targets hdl/ldl - recommend apob blood test
B. Lp(a) testing should be run on everyone to see if the have a very bad predisposition to heart issues
C. Heart medications likely need to be administered sooner in most people with bad apob numbers.

Many more detailed facts but it's worth the read if you care about how healthy you can be for as long as you live
