Keep in mind you need a 9-channel receiver to properly run these (5 surround channels plus 4 height channels) and the CHEAPEST 9-channel receivers usually run close to a grand brand new. Even looking on accessories4less the cheapest 9-channel refurbished receiver with up to date features (HDMI 2.1) is $700 which is a 2 year old Pioneer unit. So it doesnt really make sense to buy a super budget 5.1.4 sub $200 set of speakers then have to blow $700-$1k just to run them.

5.1.2 is the sweet spot for budget atmos setups because you can find relatively cheap 7 channel receivers to run those still with modern features like HDMI 2.1.

Yup, Man I am so happy that I picked up that Denon 4300H for $500 years ago. There is nothing cheaper than $1000 these days for a proper Atmos configuration.

Well there was the Onkyo 7100 that was going for $649 that many like.

Unfortunately something like this will not come close to giving you a true representation of object based soundtracks!

Thank you for the detailed info. Can this be used as a 5.1.2 system. Since I already have a sub and sony 5.1.2 receiver.

Yes although I'm pretty sure the 5.1.2 Monoprice system has been cheaper than this in the past.

But if you buy this and just dont connect the height channels on the rear it just wont be used basically.

I know 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos sounds nice on paper, but I'd high recommend the Monolith 5.1 kit at around $350. I know there is a big price difference, but it may not be that large if you consider the total price with a receiver.

Bouncing sound waves off the ceiling is a poor substitute for in-ceiling speakers.

Do you want to hear the speaker or sound waves dispersed off your ceiling?

In addition, upfiring speakers have too many issues to be a good candidate for height speakers. They need to have a serious amount of power to reach your ceiling and bounce back to your ears. Its so barely audible unless you bring the speaker up high, then in which a high wall mounted or ceiling mounted speaker would perform much better to begin with.

Monoprice has been making some good stuff for sound though, just saying for people don't expect the atmos height upfiring type to do much .

Edit: A thorough video illustrating my point much better than I can explain https://youtu.be/wHEWY5DfHos

If you need hdmi 2.1 it's best to just hook up that device to a tv - you'll find much cheaper and better receivers that way. You can also get hdmi splitters as well if you have multiple 2.1 devices.

No - these are passive non amplified speakers
