ABS hardside laggauge has a reputation for being heavy and getting smashed to pieces. You can get a equalivent polycarbonate samsonite for under $70 on sale with a lifetime warranty. Save yourself the headache and get something more reliable.

For a check in bag, I totally agree with you. But for carry ons, I feel that ABS is sufficient, and it is a significant cost savings. With a 3year warranty for $3, it feels like the risk is justified. The lifetime warranties aren't always the easiest to deal with either (had a Swiss gear bashed in by the airlines and they "repaired" it, which probably has made it more prone to breaking)

Carry-on until you walk into the plane and find out they're out of space.

It appears to be 1/3 of an inch too wide for most American airlines, but I guess many don't check as long as the overhead closes.

People keep saying that and yet I haven't seen any sales at that price yet. I will say my ABS bag has lasted years of travel and abuse. Might be a little beat up but still going strong. Would like a new Samsonite poly bag, so always keeping eyes peeled.

ABS is lighter than polycarbonate...

That's a common misconception. It's true ABS has a lighter density, but the specific strength of polycarbonate is roughly 1.3x that of ABS. In order for a ABS sheet to be as strong as the equalivent polycarbonate sheet, it actually has is be heavier and thicker (less space for storage). Manufacturers don't really do that, so you just end up with weaker luggage.

The size of the luggage isw 22x15x9. The size that airlines set for carryon is 22x14x9 or 45 linear inches. One inch too big.

Important to mention you have to ship them your bag on your own dime or bring to an authorized repair center for service. Shipping the bag is $15 for a small bag and $20 for a large bag I think.

Southwest size limit is 24x16x10. Best to check with the airline you plan to travel before ruling this out.

Thanks, OP. I ordered the blue one and it arrived yesterday. It is replacing my old, cheap ABS hard shell carry-on that I have used at least twice a month for 15+ years. The handle mechanism finally gave out, but the shell was still good.

The new one is at least as strong as the old one, and is very slightly smaller. I never had an issue with the size of the old carry-on with Southwest, Delta or American.

Can you please drop a link where a polycarbonate Samsonite is under $70?? Even a fabric material Samsonite carry-on is $140 at Costco.

How can you tell whether a suitcase is abs or polycarbonate if there's no label stating the material?
