It's fine but you can find the Mini 3 Pro for this price used.

The regular Mini 3 can be had brand new from Costco for. $429 with the non RC remote. Which to me is better since you can run 3rd party software that actually has more features.

Probably overkill, but they'll have a blast with it. The pro offers a (fake) 48MP mode vs 12 MP, 60 FPS at 4k video vs 30 FPS, and some better collision sensing (but not perfect), and that's about it. Technically it has a longer range; practically, you can't see these drones at their distance limit, and - assuming you're in the US, you MUST have line of sight to the drone at all times and t must be close enough that you can tell which direction it's moving without using any optical visual aids (i.e. binoculars don't count).

About the fake 48MP vs 12 MP. The sensor in both is the same (1/1.3 CMOS) and there is a color filter over the sensor (Bayer pattern) that is used to get color information from a single sensor. The 12MP bins multiple senor sites to get better light collection and reduce artifacts. In the pro, they give you all the data off the 48 MP sensor. There is diminishingly small additional clarity from the higher resolution photo. I have the mini 4 pro as well as and OG mini; I also had an Insta 360 X2 and X3, with similar setups (18MP and 72MP resolutions, X2 was binned, X3 offered both binned and direct readout). In all cases, the additional pixels provide barely visible additional detail and clarity. You're getting maybe a 10-15% better image, not a 2x-4x better as might be suggested by the MP count.

RE: controllers. For a beginner, the dedicated controller is nice. If you were a hard-core flier wanting to use 3rd party software for specialty effects and to fly places where it's prohibited (and the OEM has GPS lockouts), sure - there's a *theoretical* advantage to using your phone. I've flown both ways and I prefer the dedicated controller with one exception: you have to manually transfer the files off the drone/SD card or do a special direct-connect after the flight vs simply saving to your phone's camera roll from the app. I kind of hate that about my Mini 4, tbh, but it's not the end of the world.

Warranty is only valid for manufacturing defects, not crashes. First time drone owners beware...

I know with refurbished drones you can get DJI care. I got info directly from DJI. Open box. Maybe different story. I'd get it in writing from them
