How many of you all are using the 12v platform? I am very happy with the 18/36v system, and am curious who uses these.

I'm stupid as shit to use these because of SD effect. First I got a 12v 4ah battery because it was a great deal without realizing it wasn't 18v until after a few months I purchased. So stuck with that and without a charger I can't use that battery. So started looking for a charger and ended up buying a drill kit with 2ah battery and charger. Now I ordered this damn thing! Not sure what I am gonna use it with. 🤦 ♂️

I bought into it like 5 years ago with the drill, impact, 3/8 impact wrench and jigsaw. All are the brushless models. Been really happy with them and rarely use the 18v versions I have of the impact and drill. Makita hasnt done anything with the 12v line up and mostly seems to push the brushed tools. Its disappointing. Not sure i'd buy into the line again now but just looking now the makita 12v drill is still lighter than the current gen Milwaukee fuel 12v. The Milwaukee makes more torque but that isnt the point of these tools in my opinion. I want good enough with light and compact. And a drill that stands up on its own without a larger battery pack. Perhaps dewalts 12v lineup is worthwhile.

Thanks for the info! I do have the 12v Bosch 5-in-1 Flexiclick brushless drill system, and it has amazed me with the torque it can put out.

I am a Makita guy, but I just haven't seen the need for adding their 12v tools.

If you're on the 18V platform the XWT12Z [amazon.com] is also pretty reasonably priced right now.

I do. I have an embarrassing number of 18v/LXT tools. But if we're being honest about actual needs, they're overkill for the vast majority of "homeowner" type tasks when it comes to drilling/driving (not talking about saws and other specialized tools). 12v/CXT is plenty for most jobs and the size and weight savings becomes more noticeable. They might not be as fast driving a 3" screw, but they'll still do it all day without complaining.

Obviously the variety of tools isn't huge, but for those everyday tasks, a little drill and 1/4" impact driver (and this 3/8" that I bought a few weeks ago on a similar deal) are sufficient. And they're easy to use and more forgiving for the rest of my family that are not regular users. I keep the 18v stuff in the workshop, and the 12v stuff around the house and garage.

I actually really wish they still supported the old pod-style 12v/10.8v system. I have a bunch of those and still love the ultra compact size and weight.

Thanks for the info! I usually do all the repairs myself, so I don't mind the extra 18v weight. Keeping two systems batteries is more expensive as well. The perfect tool for the job is always nice though!

One thing not mentioned yet is this slide style of 12v battery results in slimmer, better feeling handles.

Stem style 12v batteries like Milwaukee's M12 and Bosch's 12V line have very chunk handles that make the tools feel clunky, in my opinion.

It's a shame Makita has all but abandoned their 12v line.

In CXT, I have the brushless drills, rotary hammer, inflator, multi cutter, brushless barrel jigsaw, mini recip, mini circ, caulk guns, a couple lights. I have a lot more in the 18v LXT and I'm brand-agnostic, so I also run a few tools in Bosch, Milwaukee, Hitachi, and Dewalt.

The brushless version of the jigsaw and the rotary hammer are first rate tools. I prefer the drills to the Dewalt 12v, but I think the Milwaukee 12v drills edge them out slightly (not in ergos); IME Bosch 12v drills surpass the CXT in just about every respect. Everything else is fair to very good within its limitations. The mini recip for example is an excellent pruning tool and very controllable for metal cutting, but worthless for demo. I've used the mini circ extensively, although it is built like a toy. I can get excellent results on small moulding projects vs dragging out a massive miter saw. I've also done extensive work with it in my small apartment where I modified the housing to achieve dust collection that rivals my LXT tracksaw.

Obviously, I'm in the minority of users. I'm a fan and wish they would expand the CXT platform, but I've bought most of the tools I do have on clearance at prices that made them no-brainers. The brushless jigsaw for example would have cost me 4x as much for the LXT version, and I actually prefer the smaller tool. I think it has more finesse for the detail work I do use it for.
