Yes, there most likely will be a gen 2 in 2024, but likely not till Q3-4. It also won't be a wildly different product or have vast improvements though. Just a couple of minor things most likely.

I really didn't want to believe it either, but Siri is just really that bad. Even basic stuff like setting timers and getting weather, it will just not respond or ask who's speaking over and over again. Mine also frequently tells me it's unable to connect to the internet. It is nice having it as a home hub. But I imagine most have an AppleTV already.

Siri is terrible. It gets even worse with these auxiliary devices, such as HomePod and Apple Watch. You make a good point, though; a HomePod on sale is worth it as a Home hub if you don't already own something that acts as a hub. Most of the lights in and around my home are fully automated and it's great.
