I got this deal a couple years ago for $148... Would this years TV be faster or better in any way? My old one is getting sluggish and is pushing 5 years old. Same 4 series... I assume they get updated hardware each year??

I'd agree something along those lines should help. Also if you have a ton of apps installed, that may be part of the problem as well. I have the cheap TCL 4 series bf special from a few years ago as well. I only use and keep the tuner and just a few apps that I regularly use installed on it. It also stays fully updated so I don't skip out there either. It still runs fine and just as well as the day it came out of the box.

Why not just buy a Roku stick or etc for $30~ instead of a whole new TV?

Or just buy a used hdmi streaming box that has much better SOC in it than the one TCL decided to put into the tv in the first place and bypass it entirely; and no need to deal with having two TVs
