False.
224+ has Intel cpu and GPU.
Hardware transcoding works great on this box.

DS224+ is Intel, not AMD. Just stop posting.

I just got a DS918+ this past summer. Would the DS923+ be worth the upgrade? Or better off just buying larger disks.
I would never buy newer discs until you need them. If you have 10 terabytes and you've only filled up one to five terabytes over several months or years, then use that as a guide. Hard drives get bigger and cheaper as time goes by. Don't invest in bigger hard drives if you don't need them right now. at some point you can drag those two existing hard drives you have over to a four-drive or more NAS when you are existing Nas fails or is no longer supported with security or firmware updates.

For those wondering, got my Synology DS224+ today from B&H Photo, which worked seamlessly with a Timetec 16 GB memory upgrade and 2 4TB WD Red Plus drives set up as BTRS SHR.

For which NAS? The DS224+ for instance is non-ECC. To get a quick idea, you can always go to the crucial.com website to get memory requirements.

I screwed up. I ordered this Synology DS224+ and also the current deal for two WD Red Pro 20TB WD201KFGX. I didn't realize these NAS are not compatible with 20TB drives. I tried to cancel my WD order, but it has already shipped :-(.
Looks like I'll be returning the WD drives.

Edited to add: I think I'll return this DS224+ as well. Looking for better upgradeability and don't want to be stuck with 16TB capacity. Apparently, none of the Synology NAS support the 20TB drives. Bummer.

What are you basing this on? Limitations generally apply to memory, not hard drives.

Synology DiskStation DS224+ review: Out with the old, in with the old [androidpolice.com]

"The two 3.5-inch drive bays should be capable of supporting drives with capacities up to 20TB, resulting in a maximum raw capacity of 40TB for the NAS."

On a separate note, if you are really planning to use that much space, you are better off with a unit that has more bays since the drives will ultimately die and it is cheaper to replace lower capacity drives as needed. Would also recommend a SHR/RAID, which again is safer and always have a 3-2-1 backup regardless for irreplaceble files.

I did an online chat with Synology customer support a couple of hours ago. The support tech emphasized that the 20TB drives are NOT compatible. They also linked to a compatibility list, where the largest drive listed was 16TB (Seagate Ironwolf). https://www.synology.com/en-us/co...odel=DS224

I also couldn't find any reviews (Amazon and B&H) that specified use with larger capacity drives. Unless multiple people can confirm to me that those exact drives work with this unit, I'll have to do a return.
It's my fault really for not confirming before purchase, but I wish the details of maximum HDD size were listed in the Synology specs for this unit so that I could have avoided this ahead of time.

I'm quite disappointed that 20TB drives don't work with Synology units. It's not like the 20TB drives are brand new. Haven't they (20TB drives) been around for nearly 3 years now?

Most of us throw the Synology compatibility list out the window, which is based on what they have gotten around to test. For instance, a 16 GB memory module works on a DS224+ (based on the J4125 processor) that Synology only says supports an additional 4GB.

That said, only buy what you are comfortable with since Synology can simply deny warranty claims for "unsupported" hardware.

Sorry, a noob to NAS question regarding the DS923+ : Will it work with the Seagate - IronWolf 8TB Internal SATA NAS Hard Drive? I'm thinking it will, but when I tried to look at the Synology HD compatibility list (https://www.synology.com/en-us/compatibility?search_by=products&model=DS923%2B&category=hdds_no_ssd_... [synology.com] ), the form factor looks fine, but heck if I know the firmware is okay. It's pretty main stream but didn't want to assume.

(And side note, someone else posted on a different thread to a deal on Best Buy for this type of HD > https://www.bestbuy.com/site/seag...Id=6387161 in case anyone is interested or is cash strapped this cyber Monday.)

Thanks much for sharing this info.
Now other question, is it worth the cost? With google drive I am getting 100 GB/$20/Year. This costs around $250-$270 with a 4 TB HDD. Could you let me know?

Also, Synology DiskStation DS120j 1-Bay NAS Enclosure this costs around $100 and additional for HDD. Let me know.
You could get 6TB from Microsoft OneDrive using their Family plan for $99/year [microsoft.com]. The caveat is that it would be 6 accounts with 1TB each.

There's a trick to make all 6x1TB OneDrive accounts accessible from your main OneDrive account: Select one account as your primary, create 5 secondary accounts, create a folder in each secondary account, share those folders to your primary account. Those folders will be accessible from your primary account and will look like regular folders; each will be able to hold 1TB of data.

For example, I have my primary account with Documents, Pictures, Videos, etc. and in a secondary account I created a folder called "Videos ([email protected])" and shared that to my primary account. When logged into my primary account, I will see the "Videos ([email protected])" along side the Documents, Pictures, Videos, etc. folders except everything I copy to that folder will take up space in the secondary account rather than my primary. I copy all my movies to these secondary "Videos ([email protected])" folders and just use my primary account for my other files.

(On a side note, this works quite well for me because OneDrive supports streaming of video files. In other words, I can use the OneDrive app on my iPhone to watch movies/tv without having to pre-download the video files.)

Alternatively, you could use StableBit DrivePool [stablebit.com] to just combine all your OneDrive accounts into one 6TB drive.

Don't want to break the conversation. Wanted to share my work. I bought 2 14Tb hard drive from Costco and Shuking them and used in my Synology NAS drive DS923+ and it's absolutely working fine. I would like to thanks to the chain of conversations that helped me alot. It saved lots of my dollars. Please note the warranty on hard drive will not get voided as it is on the serial number for 1 year however additional Costco warranty won't be applicable 😀😀. Special thanks to OP
