Shame a few years ago they started making the dimensions on these much smaller. So if you have older ones, they won't be the same size just a heads up.

Thoughts on the grey?
Color is mostly a personal preference. The grey shows more wood grain but reminds me of furniture made from driftwood. White vs black/brown reflects a personal preference on light vs dark woods and home decor. My apartment was built new this year with white walls and cabinets (and light colored wood flooring) so white furniture would be too albino. A home from the 1970s or 1980s probably already has enough dark wood in it.

For those going in-store:

There's also the option to save an additional $40 on Fridays in stores (offer listed on Ikea home page): "IKEA Family members who eat at the Swedish Restaurant Fridays through 12/22/23 get a coupon on their receipt for up to $40 of the amount spent that can be used that day on IKEA store purchases of $150 or more. Offer not valid on 12/8/23."

I thought $279 was a good price. $199 is the best I've seen in years.

The Black/Brown is fine. The whole Hemnes set for a bedroom would be well under $999. Not bad since it's Pine.

Of course I bought it in September with the then decent 15% off deal and the price drops a ton now. I submitted a price adjustment request to Ikea Family and will see if it actually works.

I bought these in late August and saved $210 by doing a price adjustment in Oct, then did another price adjustment today on the same items (via phone) and should save another $300.

Although the price match is limited to 90 days they give a full year for returning new merchandise so rebuy-and-return could basically net a yearlong price match term.

Thanks for the datapoint. The phone rep said it would take up to 48 hours to get a response on whether the price adjustment will be approved or not. Did you see something similar too in your experience?

Also chat was utterly useless for a price adjustment. The phone was smoother with a US-based rep.

For the first match they said to allow 7-10 days for processing. The second match gave no timeline, and neither ever made it sound like approval would need to be granted (both put me on hold before writing the case ticket, so dunno if that was for review/approval or something else).

Just to reiterate, Hemnes ARE real wood (pine), and the black/brown does have a real matte wood grain texture. We have the 3 drawer chest and it's held up well, though we've switched to white decor.

Main thing about Hemnes I'm not a fan of are the drawers aren't as premium, they rattle a little bit and are noisy when they roll. Compared to, say, the Besta drawers which are soft-close.

My rep just told me it would be sent to a back office workflow for approval and it has to be decided upon by the local store within a certain amount of time, usually a few days. She just said call back with the case number to receive an update on the judgement by the middle of next week if I hear nothing.

The Idanas chests looked like a good successor for the Hemnes with soft close drawers. but it commanded such a huge price premium and seemed to have a smaller capacity that it didn't make a lot of sense to deviate from the tried and true Hemnes.

I read the website and larger section on the Swedish restaurant area, and terms at the bottom... But I can't tell if the coupon is only good for that day...up til 12/22... Or doesn't expire (wishful thinking)?

Happen to know?

Details on the restaurant page say must be same day and same store. If it's like the last coupon I used ($15 off $150 around labor day) then you won't get the family 5% off.

I used a $15 off coupon and a month later did an in-store price match when the 2-drawer hemnes went on sale. The CS clerk wasn't sure how to process the match, and after awhile a more senior rep had her simply refund the full difference (so I basically got the sale price and a $15 discount).

I've mostly been aware of hemnes size changes by looking at the reviews of the optional glass tops—people with older models are unhappy the current glass is a different dimension than what they need (and no way to buy a different size glass).

Thanks for the info.

I picked up the 8 drawer grey one on the sale that just ended the other day. This is our second one for our guest bedroom. Same dimensions as the one we picked up in 2015.

But now Im playing the waiting game for a sale on the grey 2 door Hemnes to have as night stands. Basically the same setup we have in our master. No way am I paying full price on those. What color and sale was going on for those 2 doors a couple months back? Pretty slick on your pm and snagging the prior 15 off along w the current discount.
