Well for someone with an Apple Card and/or can take advantage of EDU discount (ymmv/TBD on that) and/or no Costco membership and/or lives close to a tax-free state, it maybe a better deal to buy from Apple directly.

As a few others have mentioned, this promotion does NOT apply to the education store or military discount. Just adding a confirmation based on an Apple Sales Specialist's response:

"Upon checking here, the Apple Store Shopping Event is available at the consumer store. As of now, the promotion is not eligible with the Educational discount or through Veterans and Military discount."

The 200 is taxed as part of "full price" purchase price, so when you factor that in, the net value of the gift card is less than 200 after taxes. My local tax is over 10%, so the net "savings" is not 200, but rather only about 180. Plus you have to spend on Apple stuff. If you buy from Costco for 200 less to begin with, you save 200 plus sales tax on that 200 and that savings can be spent anywhere. But you miss out on the premium Apple buying experience and nice shopping bag. Maybe that's worth 20?

Your best deal won't be the same for everyone. Shopping at Apple gives me a 10% veterans discount, value for my trade-in and a way to use all the Apple gift cards I've been hoarding from sales at Target. After all the dust settles my Ultra 2 will be about $300.

That's an excellent point most people don't think about.
Plus, a lot of people have the Apple CC, myself included. That's zero percent interest and very easy returns when bought through Apple.

Yeah it's almost always cheaper to buy Apple stuff from retailers like Best Buy, Target or Amazon. Right now they all have extended holiday returns. Outside of that they follow the 14-15 day return policy on Apple products.

Costco as well. They have 90 day returns on electronics.

In the US the only retailers I know that sell unlocked iPhones are Apple and Costco. Otherwise I think they're all tied to 24-36 month phone contracts.

Would think about getting the Wells Fargo $200 off $500 spent card buying apple gift cards at target for $100 + $15 gift cards 5 times and get Mac mini with gift cards for a $200 gift card!
