In case you are looking at this as a solution for streaming games from your desktop to another room, please be aware that GeForce Experience and Nvidia no longer support GameStream.

Sunshine and Moonlight are the server-client pair of apps you will want to use to do any LAN game streaming. They are relatively easy to set up, but it's something you should know about before purchasing if you intend to use this as a game streaming device.

As for performance, I have not had any issues at all with this model of Shield. I used it to replace the smart features on a 2016 Samsung TV that was getting progressively more annoying and losing support for applications like Twitch.

I was a diehard Shield user. I switched to the Apple 4k. Did obsessive side by sides. In my experience, the apple has better color and picture quailty. Nothing is perfect as the sound quailty on the shield is better than apples 4k. I only stream no gaming.

Well it's quite clear that Nvidia will milk this thing till they can't. I also don't see them releasing another shield which is just unfortunate. Google should capitalize on this and release Google TV Pro or something that can replace the shield. And if nothing is done about it then I think we're back to having two devices, one for Kodi/emulation and one for streaming.

I love mine BUT the Google Android OS and the apps on it are far from perfect. How they haven't come out with anything new or updates is getting embarrassing. The day Roku or someone else comes out with something like this with some heavy processing and abilities… I'll be out. I think relying on Google is a big weakness

Thank you! Now I know. I never could figure out why shield. I consider myself tech savvy, code, program and it was boggling my mind..Figured there had to be very specific use, but wasn't absolutely sure if I was missing something.

As far as its upscaling.. maybe in 2019 it was good, and unless you have a mediocre TV, it made my picture quality worse.

No idea if it will happen, but I wonder if/when Nvidia produces the chip for Nintendo's next handheld (rumored T234 chip) that could also be used in a new Shield model. The current Shield has the same chip (Tegra X1+) as Nintendo Switch, but less RAM.

On top of this, after updates the device runs slower than most less expensive devices. Many newer devices for similar pricing are out there. Even the Verizon StreamTV is faster.

The original shield was created as a result of their failed tablet experiment with tegra (due to their power hungry characteristic) but they hit gold with it when Nintendo decided to use the platform on switch. They still support Android tv on it for a long time, most likely to use it as a testing ground for game streaming and extract minor profits unlike companies like Roku that have their entire business set around the tv platform and ads.

Exactly. On the other extreme end of the android tv spectrum, you have the Walmart onn 4K box for $20

Raw audio passthrough and support for all the apps I want (Moonlight, Jellyfin, regular streaming apps) all in one device. I have an Apple TV 4k and yeah it's faster but limited in the ways you stated. Unfortunately, Shield launchers are getting covered in ads now and the RAM isn't enough to hold the paused video in memory whenever the stupid screen saver kicks in. Apps like Disney+ never work the first time anymore and the Shield has to be rebooted to play a video... I think a RAM issue. I really love the Shield but I would pay $500 for a brand new updated one with more RAM and faster processor. I'm not aware of any alternative streaming setup that can do what Shield does just with better specs so I don't have these issues. Any ideas?

this really should be $100 at this point. regular software updates is what kept this device alive and this is why it is still the best android device out their.
