In case you are looking at this as a solution for streaming games from your desktop to another room, please be aware that GeForce Experience and Nvidia no longer support GameStream.

Sunshine and Moonlight are the server-client pair of apps you will want to use to do any LAN game streaming. They are relatively easy to set up, but it's something you should know about before purchasing if you intend to use this as a game streaming device.

Moonlight: https://github.com/moonlight-stream/moonlight-qt

As for performance, I have not had any issues at all with this model of Shield. I used it to replace the smart features on a 2016 Samsung TV that was getting progressively more annoying and losing support for applications like Twitch.
Isn't this like 6 years old?
I was a diehard Shield user. I switched to the Apple 4k. Did obsessive side by sides. In my experience, the apple has better color and picture quailty. Nothing is perfect as the sound quailty on the shield is better than apples 4k. I only stream no gaming.

From Nvidia's perspective, the shield is such a small product segment among their much more lucrative datacenter, GPU and AI chip market that its entire sales during the year is a rounding error. They don't even separate it out on their quarterly earnings. The original shield was created as a result of their failed tablet experiment with tegra (due to their power hungry characteristic) but they hit gold with it when Nintendo decided to use the platform on switch. They still support Android tv on it for a long time, most likely to use it as a testing ground for game streaming and extract minor profits unlike companies like Roku that have their entire business set around the tv platform and ads.
You're not wrong on that front. Still need to complain! Rabble rabble!

Just kidding, but seriously, doesn't seem like they need to invest that much more R&D to make something that trounces everything else again, especially in this era of AI everyone's trying to milk.

It keeps showing up at this price on deal and I keep saying I am going to hold out because it is 4 -5 years old.

Problem is it keeps staying the same price, gets a year older and I still dont have one : )

At this point I am just going to wait it out

The newest firestick has basically the same specs as this. HARD PASS
I was hoping to find a cheaper alternative. Does the new firestick do lossless audio passthrough?

My 5 years old LG OLED Tv have integrated netflix and disney+ app and the user experience so far so good. I using jailbreak Oppo 205 for BDMV and ISO playback from NAS. Is this worth to invest shield pro to play h265 mkv mp4 and some china streaming apps? I also having google chromecast 4k for travelling purpose only.
really depends on the content you view and the audio type. If everything you have plays fine in the smart app you should be fine. If you have a lot of high quality rips that have lossless audio etc you may want to consider the shield. The shield also supports many subtitle formats which can cause issues for some using other devices.

I've owned two since launch and every update brings a worse experience. It's basically become an ad box at this point.

I don't think it's as solid as the shield but it can to an extent. The shield was a great streaming device, but it is no longer worth the amount they are asking even at this price. It was worth it when I paid $200 for it for years ago.

My biggest gripe with the shield when it freezes instead of properly going into standby. Causes me to unplug it, which is not ideal when other people in house try to use TV.

On one hand, its the only Android device that can do what it does: 4K rip playback with all the bells and whistles.

On the other hand, it's in serious need of a revision.

The only real advantage that the Shield still has over other media players is the ability to play 4K Dolby Vision Blu-ray rips with lossless audio correctly passed through to a receiver. It will only play the minimum enhancement (MEL) of Dolby Vision profile 7, though. There IS a substantial difference between lossless/HD audio from a Blu-ray and streaming audio (~20Mb/s vs. 1.5Mb/s). If you want to play 4K Blu-ray rips, the Shield is the (only) way to go. If you're streaming, there's no reason to get a Shield over any other streaming device.
Thank you for saying this. I have 2 Nvidia Shields and 8 AppleTV4Ks.. I just can't help but straight out laugh at people who are like "This is the best streaming device ever". No its not. I bought the Shields first before I bought the ATV's.. because back in 2015 this was the only device that could literally play any file using Plex/DLNA server streamed from my Synology NAS. This was the magical important playback device for my dedicated home theater which has a projector, screen and 7.2 surround speakers. I wanted the best picture & best sound possible.. without bothering with a bunch of physical Bluray discs.

Of course this was also a very long time ago. Now having used both Shield & ATV on a weekly basis.. IMO the ATVs work much better for practically everything BUT Bluray rips with lossless audio. That's because AppleTV outputs everything in Dolby. So when I want to hear a DTS-HD MA audio track (or the full range of sound from a movie) the Shield is still my go-to device. For any other content that is NOT a Bluray disc (aka every other streaming app).. or any other TV around my house that is using either built-in sound or a soundbar... none of this matters.

So if you aren't using a Shield for Bluray movie rips.. I cannot think of any further reason to purchase an old ass Shield, instead of a new AppleTV4K in 2023. The Shield has an old processor, feels slow to navigate, and continues to give me random issues. Sometimes apps won't open or respond, sometimes the entire OS locks up, and sometimes I have to get up and pull the power cord to hard reboot the device to get it working right again. I've also found many Android apps are not updated as often as those on AppleTV and it seems like Google is only adding more ads to AndroidTV.

The interface on ATV is significantly easier, faster, and overall better for practically anyone to navigate. This is especially important to me as I now use the ATV streaming box on all 8 of the TVs in my home. So doesn't matter if my wife.. young kids or even 77-year-old grandparents grab the remote.. everybody knows exactly how to turn on the TV, find the app they want to use, and navigate to whatever content they want to watch.

Have 4 versions of the Shield in our house, this one, 2 of the tubes, and the original model, which I ripped the 500GB platter drive out of and replaced with an SSD (technically it's now faster than this one for most stuff, lol). Great little machines, I really hope Nvidia announces some sort of substantive refresh in the next year tho.

When does the new model come out?
Highly doubt there'll be a new model out anytime. As another poster mentioned that the shield has specific use cases for playing DV Blu-ray rips from USB or NAS and as a plex server. I regret not getting one earlier 4 years back till I picked one this year on eBay.

I recently picked up a Shield after I started ripping my Blu-ray collection, I had owned one previously but FandangoNow at the time was a really awful app on Android TV so I got rid of it. But since getting my new one I feel like the software experience has really deteriorated, lots more bugs, interface is more sluggish, and more advertisements on the home screen.

The Shield is great because it supports the most audio codecs, but if you are not watching ripped blu-ray's on plex/jellyfin/locally I think the Apple TV is the best experience and best buy in the space atm

AI Enhanced upscaling is second to none, but the fact that this is a 4 year old device is showing its age. My Shield TV Pro that's less than a year old stutters way too much. They need to replace this already.
Mine doesn't stutter and I've had it since release. I did switch launchers (ATV) because I liked the simple launcher with just apps laid out instead of the clutter with ads crap. So performance might be different if I stuck with the default launcher.

I have just about every top model of the current devices and all them are collecting dust. I want to find something better than the Shield, but just haven't yet.

While it definitely is showing its age, I still prefer to use mine due to the lower power usage than consoles and better output (at least for the moment) than a stick of any form. I will look into an Apple TV after these comments though.

Shield has a specific use case. If you don't have a home theater setup (not a sound bar) to take advantage of hi-res, lossless audio then I would move along because this is overkill for basic streaming.
100%. No other device does Atmos flawlessly across all streaming services as well as Plex. It's untouched. Would love a new version to extend its emulation abilities, but there's a reason this thing is still ~$200 4 years later.
