No, they both essentially max out the SATA port. That's the real limitation. With that said, the 870 has a better controller, so....technically faster..? You won't notice a difference.

It's surprisingly hard to check whether this is TLC or QLC. Apparently MX500 began as TLC but QLC variants were later introduced.

How about longevity? Which one will survive more writes?

That was a rumor and had been verified by multiple sources that MX500 is still TLC variant. QLC variants were some random counterfeit stuff purchased from aliexpress and shiz.

If I have an extra m.2 slot available, should I wait or is this the best price for extra storage?

Go with m.2 SSD as they are like 10X faster than SATA and don't cost much more. Ex: https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Pl...098WKQRDL/

Ordered a couple. Read in reviews that you might have to update the firmware on these drives to prevent random disconnects. If the drive isn't detected by crucial app, then you may have to run some kind of a benchmark on it and try updating again while the benchmark is running.

Edit: Just received them. They both came with the latest *46 firmware, which should prevent random disconnects. I'll be using them in a dual drive Synology box. I know that these aren't the optimal type of drives for this task, but I'm not planning on writing lots of data, so hopefully they'll be fine. I've also read that 870 EVO's haven't been performing that well lately (I have one in a laptop, and it's working fine), so I'm giving these a try instead.

Hard to say. You're talking about the #1 and #2 consumer SATA SSDs. I will say the EVO has a higher TBW limit, but with that said, I think you would have to write something like 92GB of data everyday for 5 years to before you'd reach the MX500 TBW limit.

Both are great SATA drives. You won't go wrong with either.

Edit: Both also have a 5 year warranty.

If I clone my existing primary drive to this and then set this as the boot drive will it be a seamless swap?
