Unless you favor a physically tougher unit and hardware encryption, you're better off with the X8 at $160 as there are no data performance differences between the two.

Amazon has a holiday return policy until Jan 31st, 2024 so can always buy now and think about it later
This is TLC. Uses Micron's 176L 3D TLC NAND, according to Anandtech
SSD is a type of storage device containing nonvolatile flash memory. this is in contrast to volatile flash memory like SRAM or DRAM.
some of the storage interface protocol standard are: IDE, AHCI/SATA, SAS, NVMe.

you are confusing a protocol to a physical type of storage. this is akin to confuse USB C to USB 3 (i.e. they are not strictly related, a USB C could be USB 2 or USB 4, just like Sata could be SATA spinning drive, SATA tape drive, or SATA solid state drive.)

the flash memory inside of a SATA SSD, is the exact same flash memory inside of NVMe SSD. what differ is the interface standard and controller. a NVMe is a type of SSD. it is not replacement of SSD, it is replacement of SATA.

What is the use case for these SSDs? I was told by a storage guy at work SSD is not the way to go for archiving pictures/media. What are you folks using these for?

I have a 4tb Samsung t7 hooked up to a thunderbolt port for full 1000mb transfer speeds. I use it as my Steam Game drive. I can plug this into any computer and have my entire steam game library with me. Works well with steam. I use my internal 4tb ssd for Xbox game pass and blizzard. The external ssd is actually faster at 1000mb through my thunderbolt port then my internal ssd at 500mb. My 1tb M2 is reserved mostly for the operating system and any files I save since it operates at 1500mbs transfer speeds.

I don't use mechanical drives anymore. I just make backups of important files and pictures across all 3 drives for redundancy.

I was thinking about using this exactly for pictures and media, any thoughts as to why not?

It is not ideal for long term storage, but that talking about decade vs decades, and only apply if you are in a power off state.

I think the Samsung is a better drive. Currently available at Samsung with EPP (or AAA) discount for $179.99. Also some chase cards have 15% or 20% back offers for Samsung.

And activity light (although the odd way Crucial implemented it, it seems only visible from the top).

Want to add to the decade vs decades thing. Ive had 2 SATA SSDs chilling unpowered since around 2009. Plugged them in a couple months ago to look for some files and it showed no data integrity issues. That's around 14 years without power. Also had 5 HDDs stored with them from roughly around the same time and 3 of those just didn't work. So take this same size of one as you wish lol

I have the same experience, not quite as old of drives but 5+ years. One thing to remember though is that back in the day they used SLC, then came MLC, then TLC, and now we have QLC. SLC will survive the longest by far, followed by TLC and then the least amount of time QLC. It'll be interesting to try this in 10+ years with QLC drives, to see if they still have everything without corruption.

I back up often, and when one drives is full, I buy double the size and copy forward. Keep the filled drive as a backup.
With the cost of storage, it just gets cheaper by the year.
