no reviews on costco. anyone have this?

edit: read the stream of reviews on best buy. lots of people say it work and others say it's a piece of crap. the reviews are almost all complimentary gifts to reviewers so i'm not super confident

Using a wire to connect your phone has a downside: it starts charging, which can wear out your battery over time. I like the direct connection for its lag-free experience and better quality, but I'm open to wireless CarPlay for navigation and podcasts.
Also, I read an article stating that starting your car with your phone plugged in always sends a power surge to your phone. Circuitry in your phone prevents damage, but there's always a risk. The author said to always start your car, then plug your phone in.

Could it be that reliability varies among car manufacturers? I find it interesting that in certain markets and years, like 2021 and 2024, Mazda offered wireless CarPlay for the CX-5, which seems unusual. My 2022 CX-5 even has a hotspot so I wound not be surprised if there was some dispute with Apple and their weird licensing. I think I'm going to pull the trigger and try this one out. I can always return it. My Mazda has 2 USB ports that I can use simultaneously (I can use CarPlay for navigation and a second phone as a separate audio source). So I can always switch to wired connection if reliability is an issue during roadtrips.

I have tried 3 similar devices from Amazon so far. All of them failed when a 2nd phone was connected. It wont connect to the first phone even when the other one was not nearby. Had to pair it again for it to work. Looks like it had some logic to connect only the last paired phone.

Will give this a try.

First things there are adapters that can do both Android auto and car play around this price point making this inferior then.

Next. No youtube netflix other apps that Google forbids makes these useless to me.

I found carplay from apple more responsive than Android auto though. Also many newer cars are starting to come out with Wireless caraway and aa.

Making thos further redundant in the future.

Now yes there is a market for this but that's if the market isn't solving it themselves eg hack past Google apple safety precautions due to regulations.

I would imagine a hackable version of this would be best otherwise commoners eg those bad at tech shouldn't bother while those that would buy this with too much money can save it and buy a new car

Am I the only one surprised to learn that apple CarPlay isn't wireless to begin with?

Carplay in my car needs phone to be plugged in usb port. Isn't it possible to covert the existing Carplay into wireless Carplay via dealer modification instead of using such dongle? Most newer cars already have wireless carplay

I used to think the same way but I tried one. And it really is very convenient and worth the cost. I don't have to keep my phone tethered to my dash now and now I am not limited by the length of the cord. I don't have to pull it out of my backpack and hook it up every time I start the car. And then unhook it. You could just be like, install a longer cord. Well, they go from 3 feet to 6 feet. And it's hard to keep 6 feet of cord stored away nicely in the dash.

Sometimes convenience is worth the money and for some, $70 isn't that much for it.

I bought a different model on amazon.com for about the same price.

How do you charge your phone?

I want one I can just plug into an android tablet instead of CarPlay capable head unit

You might be able to achieve that with the headunit reloaded app, there is a free version you can try.

I can't speak for this particular brand, but my general feeling on these devices (owning 3 different ones) is that they all work, but only about somewhere between 90%-97% and that non-100% rate is why people really hate them. When they work, they are great, but their failures every 10th or 20th time really drives people insane. I have to fight with mine every week or two just to get it to recognize. I can deal with it, but I can see how that can be frustrating. Especially since native wireless support (when present) is pretty flawless.

Carplay doesn't allow this for obvious reasons.

i bought a 2023 car that only had wired CarPlay While it worked fine, it was kind of a pain to plug in the phone to get the feaures. One of the recommendations for this particular model was to add wireless a CarPlay adaptor.

After much research, I picked up this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C7K7B7ML/

Like all CarPlay adaptors, the reviews are mixed. I can't remember why I got this over the other Ottoplay models, but it has been fine. I think it's only failed to connect once that wasn't my fault. (Other things that will cause it to fail that were my fault is having Wifi off, having something tethered through personal hotspot, etc)

All and all, I love the upgrade to wireless CarPlay and the ease of just getting in the car and having everything connected.

Highly recommend getting one if you have wired CarPlay, but it seems YMMV.
