seems like a good deal on a subscription that rarely goes on sale. Limited time, site says "Today only" (?)

You can get free online access for CR through your local library.
CR is pretty good for detailed and unbiased product reviews, and accepts no advertising. Though last few years it's mixed with lifestyle choices, unfortunately. Looks like this would be print subscription only.
I've been a subscriber to CR magazine since 1970. I have been an online subscriber since 2022...The Magazine version has gone steadily down in quality of content for years. They now publish a couple of double issues each year, and those are similar to the old CR mags. If you want the online version, that will cost another $25 per year. The buying guide issue is no longer printed at all, and is provided to all in an online version only! The April issue continues to be a useful buying guide for automobile purchases. I have been using Discount mags to get the paper CR mags for ~~4 years.

Just to confirm for those searching, different library systems may offer different avenues for accessing digital copies of Consumer Reports. The two libraries I've used for access to CR articles have at some point employed one or more of the 3 popular options mentioned here:
  • EBSCO databases (my favorite when searching a category, like dishwashers)
  • Flipster
  • Libby
The latter two app-based options are fine for reading a magazine, but don't necessarily make searching as easy (requiring you to use CR's index or other tools when attempting to locate targeted articles). EBSCO prioritizes search while still delivering relevant articles in portable PDF documents.

Good luck!
Jon

Just upped for another year at $12 via an email we got from CR. Not sure if it'll work for everyone, but here it is:

Also has an auto-renewal clause that you can cancel online.

I signed into the Libby app with my library card and no CR magazine there.
I think it may also depend on whether your library has signed up for it. You may want to ask your library if it's available online through Libby.

Different libraries have different arrangements on their content (or so I was told).

Yes, good points. I just checked with my library and they do not provide a digital copy of the magazine. Only online database access of product reviews and magazine hard copy there. They did take my request for the digital magazine for consideration in the future.

What do you have to do?
You just have to get a library card and go to your library's website and look for Consumer Reports. This assumes your library has a deal with CR. You'll need to check with them of course.
