seems like a good deal on a subscription that rarely goes on sale. Limited time, site says "Today only" (?)

CR is pretty good for detailed and unbiased product reviews, and accepts no advertising. Though last few years it's mixed with lifestyle choices, unfortunately. Looks like this would be print subscription only.
I've been a subscriber to CR magazine since 1970. I have been an online subscriber since 2022...The Magazine version has gone steadily down in quality of content for years. They now publish a couple of double issues each year, and those are similar to the old CR mags. If you want the online version, that will cost another $25 per year. The buying guide issue is no longer printed at all, and is provided to all in an online version only! The April issue continues to be a useful buying guide for automobile purchases. I have been using Discount mags to get the paper CR mags for ~~4 years.

Consumer Reports now rate the 2023 Ram 1500 Classic pickup truck more reliable than Toyota Tundra for the first time ever in history. This is due to Tundra's new 3.4L twin-turbo V6 engine with direct-injection. Ram 1500 only comes with 3.6L non-turbo V6 engine, fuel-injection only.

Without signing up to CR, you will be spending over $20,000 more for a less reliable Toyota Tundra for nothing.

Correct. If you get the base trim in Classic (not the regular 1500) with no complex electronics package, the actual reliability is above-average (if there's a separate reliability rating for it). Toyota Tundra is rated below-average (or fair). It's the highest reliability rating ever received for an American pickup by Consumer Reports in more than 15 years.

I signed into the Libby app with my library card and no CR magazine there.
Different libraries have different arrangements on their content (or so I was told).

Good point. With fewer subscribers, reviews may decline or they may disappear altogether as they're nonprofit with no advertising. The magazine also has articles about policy issues and everyday advice, not just reviews of products.
AND they lobby congress and collect signatures for petitions on issues that matter, like add-on fees, personal privacy and security for electronic devices, etc..

Why pay for consumer reports when youtube reviews are free? Even if the youtube reviews are sponsored, seeing the product on video gives me an unbiased review.
There are good YouTube reviews out there but the vast majority do not have what CR has - labs and engineers dedicated to their testing programs.

YouTube reviews are not unbiased. Go take a look at mattress review content creators on YT. They sit there and say they got the items free from the manufacturer "but we never let that influence our reviews." Really? Then why do they never flat out trash any item they've gotten for free? Besides, some 35 year old woman rolling around on a mattress aint gonna give me the same details as the extensive objective test results done by CR. These creators aren't going to bite the hand that gave them thousands of dollars in merch.

What I really want is a discount to the CR online archives. I don't hoard magazines so if I decide to buy an item and that month's mag doesn't feature it, I'm SOL on getting CR's input on it.
Left unsaid above but correctly implied is that CR anonymously buys every item they review.

CR policy "whoever pays me more will get a higher rating" sad but true. Look at the sponsors of the research before making a purchase decision 🤷

Yes CR does the affiliate model. So if you buy one of their picks they get a kickback. Heavily taints the ratings and unfortunately, is how most "reviews" including places like wirecutter do things. It's nearly impossible to get impartial reviews these days.

Consumer reports isn't what it was years ago. The print issue is virtually useless without the online access. Many of their recommendations make absolutely no sense. Go the library access route.

Also curious whether this gives access to their online - the most useful stuff is there. Magazine is just pictures and ADs from what I remember from years ago
The online database is available at a discount [consumerreports.org] to print magazine subscribers, but is not otherwise normally included with the print subscription.

Good luck!

My library lets me access Consumer Reports digitally for free. Might be worth checking out before getting a subscription.

Is that to the magazine or the database? My library only allows access to the database, with the magazine only available in the reference section. So for me, this inexpensive print subscription works well.
